Following the exciting news that Michelle Garza Cervera (Huesera: The Bone Woman) is set to direct a remake of the 1992 The Hand that Rocks the Cradle thriller AND the extra exciting news that scream queen Maika Monroe (It Follows, The Guest, Longlegs) is set to star, Deadline revealed yesterday that fellow scream queen Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Death Proof, Final Destination 3, Black Christmas) is also eyeing a lead role.
Curtis Hanson's original film starred Rebecca De Mornay and Annabella Sciorra and follows a woman, played by De Mornay, who after her sex-offender husband gets caught in the act and kills himself, embarks on a mission of vengeance against one of her husbandโs victims and the womanโs family.
Deadline let us know that, in 20th Century's upcoming reboot, Monroe will take on the role of De Mornay, while Winstead will play Sciorra's role.
Micah Bloomberg (Sanctuary, Homecoming) will pen the script.
The Hand that Rocks the Cradle makes another exciting genre addition for Monroe's already-stacked filmography, that also includes the upcoming long-awaited It Follows sequel, They Follow.
While horror has always dissected societal expectations and roles put upon women, Garza Cervera's The Hand that Rocks the Cradle is ideal for the current landscape of female-directed horror directly addressing these issues, such as The First Omen and The Substance. Anyone who has seen the magnificent Huesera: The Bone Woman can surely attest.
