Fresh off a successful streaming debut on Prime Video earlier this month, Mike Flanagan's Carrie series has been officially picked up for a second season.
Starring Summer H. Howell as telekinetic teen Carrie White, Flanagan's latest Stephen King adaptation reimagines the horror author's debut novel for the modern age, with the eight-episode first season garnering acclaim from both critics and fans.
Samanatha Sloyan, Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Tota, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder, and Matthew Lillard also star in Season 1 of Carrie, which according to Deadline, scored 3.6M U.S. views in its first full week, hitting number 1 in over 105 countries worldwide.
A second season of Carrie should therefore come as little surprise, especially as – SPOILERS! – Season 1 diverged from King's original story, ending on a cliffhanger that sees Carrie survive the night of the prom massacre with fellow psychic Emaline (Dudek), cult leader Adelaide (Kate Siegel) hot on their heels.
No news yet on who will star in Carrie‘s second season, but we'd presume it's safe to say Howell, Dudek, and Siegel at least will be back.
Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios, had the following to say of Carrie‘s renewal:
“Carrie is connecting with both longtime Stephen King fans and a new generation altogether — including young adults and international audiences, with particular strength among female viewers […] It speaks to the enduring power of this story and signals that Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of the iconic IP has real breadth. We’re excited by where he and Stephen plan to take the story.”
Flanagan has previously gone on record to say that three seasons of Carrie is his “dream scenario“, and it looks like that dream is coming true.
Stay tuned for more on Carrie Season 2 as we get it, and for more on Flanagan's upcoming projects, here's everything the modern horror master has in the pipeline.
