Two years after becoming an Oscar nominee for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, Lily Gladstone is tackling a horror movie. Deadline reports that the Fancy Dance actress is set to star in The Curse of Silver, a new horror western set to be directed by Geoff Marslett and Kiowa Gordon.
Gordon is also set to star in The Curse of Silver alongside Gladstone, which is written by Marslett and Rafael A. Ruiz. The film, which has been selected for this year’s Gotham Week Project Market, is described by Deadline as follows:
“Set on the lawless Texas-Mexico border in the aftermath of the Civil War, the film follows two Union deserters who drag a cursed chest of Confederate silver into a besieged town, unwittingly unleashing supernatural violence.”
Gladstone and Gordon also serve as executive producers on the film, alongside Michael Mortensen, with Liz Cardenas and Ram Getz also producing. The film is far from the first western Gladstone’s starred in, but one with a uniquely terrifying twist to it — on the other hand, the project is familiar ground for Gordon, who stars in AMC’s psychological thriller series Dark Winds alongside Zahn McClarnon.
While western films have certainly been on the decline since the death of the classic Hollywood “spaghetti western,” it’s even rarer to see a horror western these days — Syfy’s series Wynonna Earp kept up the mantle for a while, alongside the 2015 Kurt Russell film Bone Tomahawk. Nowadays, the subgenre (also referred to as “weird westerns”) has been mostly relegated to comic books and novels, like Lauren Lee Smith’s debut novel The Night Pool, published just last month.
