A surprising streaming service continues to have a very important effect on the top horror movies on streaming this week. Hulu and Disney+ are two separate services owned by the same company, Disney,  but Disney+, as the name would imply, is more of a family-oriented app. To see films like Zak Hilditch's We Bury the Dead, and Damian McCarthy's Oddity streaming there is a pleasant, yet scary surprise, but the real shocker is seeing Na Hong-jin‘s The Wailing join the top ten after ten years and being screened on Disney+.

It shows that the most mainstream streamers who prioritize more family-oriented choices have opened up to fright films, and implies that horror has indeed made strides in mainstream acceptance of the genre.

Maggie Gyllenhaal's romantic monster movie, The Bride!, has been released to streaming and immediately made the charts and taken our hearts. It is a big swing to remix the legend of Frankenstein using IMAX cameras, distinctive lighting, with musical numbers, but is that really so different from other Frankenstein adaptations like Young Frankenstein? The Bride!, with an exclamation point in the title, seems to wear its intentions, to make noise with a feminist adaptation of the text and film, on its sleeve or as a black tar-like substance on the cheek of The Bride! herself.

Viewers at home are certainly interested in Maggie Gyllenhaal's second feature, as the streaming numbers this week tell us.

This is a zombie movie that explores different ideas about the undead and isn't the type of story that fans of the subgenre are used to, which seems to appeal to horror fans so much that the film remains in the top spot again this week. Australian writer and director Zak Hilditch (These Final Hours) has crafted a film with undead creatures that may have motives, rather than a world full of ravening corpses in relentless pursuit of living flesh.

The danger is still there, but it has more to do with human failings and grief. Daisy Ridley, Mark Coles Smith, and Brenton Thwaites star in this somber trip into another living dead universe.

We Bury the Dead is now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

  • Dust Bunny - Streaming on HBO Max

Also back for a second round is the film that asks the question, what if the monster under your bed when you were a child was actually real? We all had fears of leaving our foot or hand out over the side of the bed, but writer and director Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) takes the childhood fear to another level with the story of an eight-year-old girl who doesn't seem to be able to keep a pair of parents for very long.

Sophie Sloan plays the little girl who convinces a hitman, Mads Mikkelsen, to put a stop to the monster's killing spree. Sheila Atim, David Dastmalchian, and Sigourney Weaver also star in what is more of a “family horror film.”

Dust Bunny is now streaming on HBO Max.

Filmmaker and actor Maggie Gyllenhaal's film is inspired by both the film The Bride of Frankenstein and Mary Shelley's novel, “Frankenstein.” Rather than a more conservative adaptation or remake, Gyllenhaal has reimagined The Bride! and Mary Shelley's creation in a bright, colorful, stylized vision that gives the audience the romance that The Monster and The Bride! never got on film before. There may still be a little black and white, though.

Academy Award-winning actor Jessie Buckley (Men ), who plays The Bride! and Mary Shelley, Academy Award winner Christian Bale, Peter Sarsgaard (The Skeleton Key, Orphan), Annette Bening (Mars Attacks), Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko), and Penélope Cruz (Gothika).

The Bride! is now streaming on HBO Max.

  • Nope - Streaming on Netflix

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele's third film is also his third horror film after the acclaimed movies Get Out and Us. Nope is more of a blending of science fiction and horror, as a strange force that invades Agua Dulce, California. Two siblings, Otis “OJ” Haywood Jr. and Emerald “Em” Haywood, who come from a family that trains and handles horses for the film industry, become more determined to survive and solve the mystery of the deadly presence, as things grow stranger and more disturbing.

Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Mayhem), Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea, Barbie Ferreira (Faces of Death), and Keith David star in this unnerving terror tale, where the characters use their intelligence and film industry knowledge to fight an unimaginable being.

Nope is now streaming on Netflix.

  • The Long Walk - Streaming on Starz

Director Francis Lawrence's masterpiece, The Long Walk, keeps its spot in the top five after dropping from number four last week. While the JT Mollner-penned film has occasionally left the list, it has consistently rebounded, generally within a week. It is a film that shouldn't be as compelling as it is, considering it is literally an ever-decreasing number of young men walking forward until only one of them survives. Most of the movie is watching these guys talk and walk, but the filmmakers make it incredibly interesting between the horrifying spurts of violence.

But this is, in no small part, because of the stellar performances of the actors in the film, as an ensemble, as individuals, and the amazing chemistry between the two lead characters, Raymond “Ray” Garraty, played by Cooper Hoffman, and Peter “Pete” McVries, played by David Jonsson. Their emotional bond is the center of the film, with the marvelous work from the rest of the cast, including Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Joshua Odjick, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill, you have a film that has an all too rare quality.

The Long Walk is now streaming on Starz.

If you haven't already watched 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, what are you waiting for? Clearly, the Nia DaCosta film is still doing really well on streaming, and the news came today from series creator and director Danny Boyle that the third film in the new 28 Years Later series has been scheduled to begin filming next year. DaCosta got the gig as director of this film because of her desire to make something true to the series, but a film that differed from Boyle's style.

The film was a smashing success with critics, and if there's one thing that fans can expect from Boyle, Garland, the casts and the directors who have worked on this series is that they will always try to challenge the audience and make something that advances the series as a whole, rather than retreading the same ideas creatively.  Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Chi Lewis-Parry star in this sequel to 28 Years Later, which lays the groundwork for the next film and the return of Jim, played by Cillian Murphy.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is now streaming on Netflix.

Horror films are having a moment on Hulu and Disney+. This 2016 South Korean film, which was a highly acclaimed critical hit, was directed by Na Hong-jin and has gained a reputation for being one of the best horror films of the decade. It hasn't been in the spotlight of the top ten horror streaming list for a long time, if ever, but it has risen to the top after being added by the two streamers.

Kwak Do-won, Hwang Jung-min, and Chun Woo-hee star in this terrifying movie about an uncanny Japanese stranger who seems to be followed by a strange infection that results in grievous suffering and gruesome murders after he arrives in a remote South Korean village.

The Wailing is now streaming on Hulu and until Saturday, May 30, on Disney+.

  • Sinners - Streaming on HBO Max

One of the most popular films in theaters and on streaming in 2025 and 2026 continues to burn up the charts. Most people would never have envisioned a writer and director like Coogler making a horror film, but he did, and what a movie it is.  Coogler's passion for filmmaking helped get audiences intrigued for Sinners after a short film of Coogler giving a breakdown of aspect ratios to educate film fans on the possibilities of watching the movie in 70mm and in IMAX was released. Coogler loves film, and he really means it.

It was also an example of audiences flocking to a period film that heavily features blues music and the realities of the Jim Crow South. Coogler showed his dedication to exposing a whole new audience to the blues by casting musician Buddy Guy in Sinners as an actor, in addition to bringing his musical skills to the soundtrack. When the music, nominated for an Academy Award, was featured in a showstopping live performance at the Oscars, Guy, as one of the last remaining original bluesmen, must have felt proud.

Sinners is now streaming on HBO Max and Prime.

  • Weapons -  Streaming on Prime

Another powerfully popular film from 2025 is still holding strong on the list, too, with Zach Cregger's second hit feature film, Weapons.  It is a movie that has been used in memes, both the hot dog snack plate and the character of Aunt Gladys, which is most likely going to be very popular at Pride 2026. It does feature an openly gay couple who are honestly the happiest romance and who have the least complicated relationship in the film.

Cregger has made movies that subvert the audience's expectations of the genre and frequently contain moments of diabolical evil that spring from some of the most everyday tasks and things that happen regularly in people's lives. One of the most unsettling things about Creggers' work isn't an unimaginable cosmic monster, but how ordinary human wickedness and our worst tragedies can be.

Weapons is now streaming on HBO Max and Prime.

  • Black Phone 2 - Streaming on Netflix

Scott Derrickson's sequel to his 2021 hit, The Black Phone, is an example of a sequel made because the creative team had a great idea that they felt was worthy of another film. Too often, sequels of successful films are made simply because they made money rather than having an idea that needed to escape from the imaginations of the writers and directors' brains at any cost.

Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, Miguel Mora, and Ethan Hawke returned for the supernatural sequel with new cast members Demián Bichir and Arianna Rivas. Black Phone 2 takes the terror on the road as the siblings, Finney and Gwen, travel to a summer camp after horrifying dreams haunt Gwen.

Black Phone 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
