Three new films and one movie making a return are part of the top horror movies on streaming this week. Thrash, which was released directly to streaming by Netflix, has everything shark fans crave: deadly sharks and a flood that allows the sharks to access new prey. It's done well and landed in the top five this week. The movie that is returning for a second round is Primitive Warwhich was last seen on the list in the first week of February. Yes, dinosaur fans also have something to cheer about this week.

The sequel to one of 2023's biggest hits, Five Nights at Freddy's 2came alive on Peacock and naturally took a spot on the top horror movies streaming this week. If you loved the first film, many of the things that you loved about the first movie have returned in the sequel, with some new surprises.

But, wait, one of the horror genre's most legendary fright films is now available on Shudder, and enough curious viewers have brought it to where it belongs, in the spotlight. Faces of Deaththe cult film that was aimed squarely at everyone with a curiosity about death itself, has knocked down the door and landed with a scream among this week's top films. Not too shabby for a 48-year-old, low-budget, non-studio film that starred Los Angeles' chief medical examiner-coroner, aka the “coroner to the stars”, Dr. Thomas Noguchi.

Not a big surprise, but the Nia DaCosta-directed sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, keeps its hold on number one for the second week. While Danny Boyle did not direct the film, the script comes from Alex Garland, who has written three out of the four films in the series. Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Chi Lewis-Parry star in the film, which continues the story of Spike and Dr. Ian Kelson.

Spike becomes a “Jimmie”, one of  “Sir Lord” Jimmy Crystal's savage cult members. Jimmy Crystal is a Satanist who models his clothes and hairstyle on the disgraced Jimmy Savile, a sex offender, DJ, and BBC host. Crystal, his cult, and Dr. Ian Kelson are drawn together for what becomes a battle of wits and deception.

After its first week of release, Thrash has grabbed the second spot in the top ten. The story of a town that is already dealing with a Category 5 hurricane has even more danger added to the scenario when killer sharks swim in the flooded streets and come after the residents in a killing frenzy.  It is not just one or two sharks, but a shiver, which is the group name for a whole bunch of sharks. Oh no!

Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton), Whitney Peak (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), and Djimon Hounsou (Constantine, Deep Rising, A Quiet Place: Day One) star in this Netflix film directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow)

Thrash is now streaming on Netflix.

Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Toby Huss, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan star in Zach Cregger's second film after the critically praised and financially successful Barbarian. The story of the tragic loss of 17 students from one class in a small town calls to mind other disasters that have been visited on schools throughout the country.

There is good news for all of the fans of the character Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan. The official announcement of the Aunt Gladys prequel from Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema was announced on April 1, but it is definitely not a prank.  The prequel is to be written by Zach Cregger and Zach Shields (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and co-writer of Krampus), so it's double Zach for this next exciting installment.

Weapons is now streaming on HBO Max and Prime.

  • Sinners - Streaming on HBO Max

Ryan Coogler's first scary movie and huge horror hit is still drawing in viewers and is still in the top five. With an excellent cast including Michael B. Jordan, an Academy Award winner for the film, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo, both Academy Award nominees for Sinners, Jayme Lawson, and Omar Benson Miller, viewers can't tear themselves away from this highly entertaining and meaningful film.

It makes sense because there is so much to admire in the film, the direction and performances, of course, but the costuming, special make-up effects, and the music are just the start. There is also so much to explore and learn about, including the Delta Blues musicians, and the history of Black people, the Irish, and the Choctaw in the South, that spring from viewing the movie. It's a fascinating movie that moves you to hit the Internet for more information.

Sinners is now streaming on HBO Max and Prime.

Director Francis Lawrence's deeply emotional film about an alternative 1970s that is enduring a fascist nightmare that holds a cruel contest every year to “inspire” the citizens of the United States has risen to number six this week and came very close to cracking the top five again. With a score composed by Jeremiah Fraites, co-founder of the alternative folk band The Lumineers, there's a serene beauty to the film.

The film also has a song, “Took a Walk,” which was written for the film and performed by Shaboozey and Stephen Wilson Jr. Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Joshua Odjick, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill star in the film as one of the best ensemble casts in 2025.

Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard have also returned with new cast members, Wayne Knight, Teo Briones, McKenna Grace, and Skeet Ulrich. The story continues as the survivors of the first film stumble upon more of what happened at Freddy's in 1982, and the evil returns.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is now streaming on Peacock.

  • Faces of Death (1978) - Streaming on Shudder

FACES OF DEATH (1978) (Credit: IMDb)

This is the original film, released in 1978, that has held generations in its grip of terror. Written and directed by John Alan Schwartz, the aim of the film is to show the eager and frightened viewer the true faces of death or people dying in real life on camera.  Many of its most infamous scenes were staged, but plenty of viewers have insisted that they were real.

The videotape box art, that of a grinning skull, has a fascinating quality that is every bit as scary as the movie's reputation. While the movie has been available here and there on streaming and on YouTube, Shudder brought it back for the release of the reimagined narrative film based on the gross-out cult classic, also named Faces of Death. If you've never seen it before, this is a great time to experience it for yourself. It is a good idea if you are going to see the film co-written by Isa Mazzei and co-written and directed by Daniel Goldhaber.

Faces of Death (1978) is now streaming on AMC+ and Shudder.

Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland's return to the 28 Days Later series was what fans had been waiting for after 18 years. England is cut off from the world and is still living in the post-apocalypse, while the rest of Europe is free of the contagion. Only a few humans have managed to survive in the UK, and the colony of Lindisfarne or Holy Island still stands, as the tide of the ocean defends the colony from the infected.

Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, Chi Lewis-Parry, and Ralph Fiennes star in this film that explores the changes that still come to a world stuck in a terrifying epidemic that seems to have no end.

28 Years Later is now streaming on Netflix.
