Now that it’s added movie icon Kirsten Dunst, the upcoming sequel to The Housemaid officially has a release date. The Sydney Sweeney-led sequel will hit theaters at the end of next year, debuting alongside two of the most highly anticipated genre films of the next few years.
The Housemaid’s Secret is set to debut on December 17, 2027, two years after the first film based on Frieda McFadden’s novel hit theaters. This means it’ll be premiering the same day as both The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and the second half of Marvel’s next tentpole project, Avengers: Secret Wars. Whether it stands any chance at the box office against two major IPs is anyone’s guess, but with the first film earning over $400 million globally, it’ll likely be able to hold its own.
Sweeney returns for The Housemaid’s Secret as Millie, alongside Dunst and Michele Morrone as Enzo. Directed by Paul Feig from a script by Rebecca Sonnenshine, who also adapted the first film from McFadden’s novel, the film’s synopsis is as follows:
In The Housemaid’s Secret, Millie returns, taking a job keeping house for a woman she’s never allowed to see—only to discover the truth behind the locked door that threatens to expose secrets far darker than her own.
The Housemaid’s Secret is produced by Feig and his partner Laura Fischer, Todd Lieberman, and Sweeney, with executive producers Carly Elter and Alex Young. The film is set to begin production sometime later this year, though further casting details have yet to be announced. Lionsgate has officially optioned all three books in McFadden’s series, as well as an additional short story published in 2024, so it’s likely this isn’t the last we’ll see of Millie and her sadistic employers.
