Top Horror Movies Streaming This Week

Legendary Blues guitarist Buddy Guy is a member of the cast of Sinners and also worked on the film's music with Ludwig Göransson, the Swedish musician and one of writer and director Ryan Coogler's frequent collaborators. Göransson has created the score for all of Coogler's films. Buddy Guy said, in an interview with Variety, that other blues musicians like Muddy Waters and BB King had told him, “Man, if you outlive me, just try to keep the blues alive.”

Of his part in the film, he told the interviewer, “Because anything we can do to help the blues stay alive, I’m for it. I’m in for it.” adding about the opportunity to be interviewed, “It’s a dream come true, to be honest with you.” This speaks to the importance of music to the film, especially the Blues.

Sinners is now streaming on HBO Max and Prime.

One moment that audiences loved in Weapons and became a social media sensation is the tray of snacks that contains exactly seven hot dogs served by Principal Marcus Miller's husband, Terry, in a key scene.

Before Zach Cregger became the director we know today, he was a member of a sketch comedy group that had a television series called The Whitest Kids You Know (TWKYK). The hot dogs reference a sketch from TWKYK, called Hot Dog Timmy.  Spoiler alert: Timmy really likes hot dogs.

Trevor Moore, Cregger's friend and fellow member of TWKYK, starred in the sketch, and it is about seven hot dogs.  Moore unexpectedly died in 2021, and the reference is a tribute to him.

Weapons is now streaming on HBO Max.

Guillermo del Toro's latest film is also rising in the top ten after dropping out of the top five three weeks ago. All three of the top films on the list have been nominated for Academy Awards, and that's probably not a coincidence.

In addition, Frankenstein has been nominated for eight British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA): Jacob Elordi for Supporting Actor, Cinematography, Costume Design, Make Up & Hair, Original Score, Production Design, Special Visual Effects, and Sound.

Del Toro also made a splash at the Sundance Film Festival last week when he appeared for the 32nd anniversary of his film Cronos at the festival. Not only did he participate in Q&A sessions for Cronos, but he also made tacos and sang with mariachis.

Frankenstein is now streaming on Netflix.

This adaptation of the Richard Bachman novel, which was Stephen King's pseudonym, is holding steady at number 4 for the second week in a row. The movie is only available on Starz, which is a cable channel that has turned into a streaming service.

The great news is that if you want to watch The Long Walk at home, and you don't want to pay an exorbitant amount for another service, they are offering a deal where new customers can get the first three months for $5.00.

Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill star in this heartfelt dystopian film that is quite frightening, but ultimately life-affirming.

The Long Walk is now streaming on Starz.

With each new movie in the 28 Days Later series, the filmmakers have been consistent with telling a new story with brand new characters, and 28 Years Later was no exception.  Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, Chi Lewis-Parry, and Ralph Fiennes are the all-new cast members who are part of a new branching of the story, where a human colony on the island of Lindisfarne survives in a quarantined United Kingdom.

The fourth film, 28 Years Later, is the exception because it continues the story of the young boy Spike, “Sir Lord” Jimmy Crystal, and his gang of Jimmies, Dr. Ian Kelson, and Sampson, the rage-infected “alpha.”

Before you watch the new film, it is best to watch 28 Years Later first, so you are acquainted with the story which continues in the fourth film. Viewers at home are likely doing just that since the third film is still in the top ten.

28 Years Later is now streaming on Netflix.

Writer and director Emilie Blichfeldt's directorial debut is another one of the films on the list that has been nominated for an Academy Award. Specifically, it has been nominated for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Award at the 98th Academy Awards.

The fact that the film, which is filled with deeply disturbing body horror in the form of primitive surgeries and body mutilation, is being celebrated for its equally gorgeous make-up and hair, is wonderfully satisfying for anyone who loves horror.

Members of the Academy will watch it, and it continues the trend of a film about the punishing search for an elusive beauty standard being honored by the Academy following last year's nominations for The Substance. 

The Ugly Stepsister is now streaming on Shudder and Hulu.

Dave Franco and Alison Brie give great performances in Together, and those performances are the heart of the film. With all the gruesome body horror, their very real connection shines and raises the stakes every time they have to take desperate measures to maintain their body autonomy. Writer and director Michael Shanks, in his debut feature, shows a deep understanding of the fear that all too often causes rifts between people in love.

The unwillingness to give in to love is the motor that powers Together, which shows the sacrifices that relationships require to continue. It asks, can two become one, and is that what you really want? For a species that is highly social and craves companionship, we seem to have an equal fear of loneliness and commitment. Together makes the most of both of those fears.

Together is now streaming on Hulu.

Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, Miguel Mora, Demián Bichir, Arianna Rivas, and Ethan Hawke star in this sequel to 2021's The Black Phone, which first introduced horror fans to The Grabber.

While The Grabber was killed by Finney in the first film, the author of the short story on which the first film was based, Joe Hill, had an idea how to continue the story, which was based on the “iconic imagery” of The Grabber's masks.

The film was very successful both critically and at the box office. Only time will tell if there will be a third feature film in the series, but the potential is there if the creative minds behind the films, Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, and Joe Hill, find another story they feel needs to be told.

28 Days Later‘s distinctive look comes from it being shot with Canon XL1 digital video cameras, which gave it a realistic feel and an immediacy that connected audiences with the characters.

The final scene is shot in 35mm, showing that the world of the characters has changed. While many post-apocalyptic films tend to show the wreckage of the society that has been destroyed, director Danny Boyle chose to show an empty London that was much more eerie and disturbing.

Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson were cast mainly because most of them weren't as well known to the public, creating more realism for the film.

28 Days Later is now streaming on Shudder.

Director Mercedes Bryce Morgan's film sails into its third week in the top ten. As two couples meet at a seemingly double-booked lakehouse, we find that again, maybe you shouldn't trust people you just met that much. It's a lesson that many characters in scary movies learn the hard way.

Maddie Hasson, Alex Roe, Andra Nechita, and Marco Pigossi star in this tale of strangers with ulterior motives who want to play devious psychological games.

Nick Matthews (Saw X) was the director of photography who credits three films: A Clockwork Orange, Evil Dead II, and Funny Games as the inspiration for how the movie was shot.
