Making its world premiere tonight at Montreal’s Fantasia festival, David Bryant’s VICTIMS is an ambitious single-take thriller about a man’s mysterious abduction. It’s the solo directorial debut for Bryant, who previously served as part of the three-filmmaker team behind 2007’s DEAD WOOD; see Michael Gingold’s previous review of the DVD below.

If you clicked on to this page hoping to find some critical information that could weigh in the balance of your renting this movie or not...it begs the question: Are you freaking kidding me?!  DINOCROC VS. SUPERGATOR is a Roger (and Julie) Corman joint that pits a gigantic make-believe prehistoric crocodile against a gigantic make-believe man-made alligator. But come on, you already had that information and had made up your mind to see the flick or not the second you saw the title with “Roger Corman Presents” above it. Now, on the other hand, if you clicked on to this page to see what a reviewer could possibly say about a film like this just for the hell of it, then welcome, you’ve come to the right place.

Those hardcore horror fans who passed on INSIDIOUS (hitting DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, and having a special Fango-sponsored screening tonight in LA; see details below) because of its PG-13 rating didn’t know what they were missing—and apparently forgot about POLTERGEIST and other past films that have delivered the scary goods with PG or PG-13 ratings. POLTERGEIST, in fact, was a clear template for INSIDIOUS, which nonetheless establishes its own identity as a superior haunting story.

If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “Out of that early wave of slashers, BLOODY BIRTHDAY doesn’t get nearly enough attention,” you’re absolutely right.

I had the displeasure of having to both watch and review director Sean Skelding’s previous movie—the steaming pile of crap a.k.a. I AM VIRGIN (click here to read my scathing critique)—and concluded my assessment by writing, “I AM VIRGIN? Not anymore. After seeing this dismal film, I feel like I’ve been f**ked.” Well, I’m still a virgin (I’m 35 and saving myself for a nice girl who doesn’t mind a guy who is balding, weighs more than Val Kilmer after a hot-dog-eating contest, has fewer teeth than a 6-month-old and collects Happy Meal toys), but, boy, I feel like I’ve been f**ked again. Yup, Skelding has made another abominable film, STRIPPERLAND. And, yup, I have to review it. Man, I really wish that Rapture apocalypse had taken place on May 21…

Airing in the summer of 2009, HARPER'S ISLAND gave genre fans a horrific way to spend the sunny season. Now, beginning Saturday, June 4, Chiller is re-airing the single-season slasher, and we thought it'd be a fine time to re-post Michael Gingold's review of the series’ disc release.

Considering all of horror’s wonderfully wicked subgenres, I think it’s safe to say the horror/comedy is my least favorite. Now, I am by no means saying that chuckles have no place in the genre. Intentional or not, a strategically placed nudge or two can balance a fright film out nicely. But in an age of excess, it’s becoming too difficult to find one that knows its limits and contains more chills than laughs. I simply don’t see the point in ridiculous, random, over the top nonsense in a genre originally based on fear. Case in point: MY BLOODY WEDDING, now on DVD from R-Squared Films.

What do THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACE, FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2, Treat Williams and Michael Berryman all have in common? Yes, they‘re all remarkable, but that’s not where I’m going with this. Give up? They all have cameos in MASK MAKER (a.k.a. MASKERADE, and now on DVD from Screen Media), a film that succeeds in knowing exactly what it wants to be (don’t you hate when people say that?) and has no problems getting lost in the extensive annals of the cookie-cutter slasher film.
