This morning we’re excited to show you the trailer from A24’s The Green Knight, which certainly has a lot going on. Take a look; then we'll chat.

Got all that? We’re not sure what we expected, but we’re pretty sure it wasn’t THAT, or at any rate so MUCH of that. This is one of those trailers you need to play back a frame at a time to catch everything. That fox talked! What are those bald giants?! Someone tell me what is up with that eponymous Green Knight! Let’s see if the official synopsis holds any answers:

An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur's reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.

Lowery seems to be throwing it back to the sword & sorcery jams of the ‘80s: there’s a whiff of other Arthurian films like Excalibur, sure, but it also feels like there’s some Legend in there, maybe a dash of Ladyhawke? Hopefully no Krull, though. If you grew up on and loved those films, it seems like this thing was tailor-made for you. If you have no idea about that subgenre, you might come out of this movie different.

The Green Knight opens July 30th, 2021.
