If you've seen James Wan's The Conjuring 2 (2016), you'll recall that the sequel sent Conjuring franchise heroes Ed and Lorraine Warren to jolly old England, where things were going very poorly for the Hodgson family: the ghost of an angry old man, sleepwalking children, a good ol' fashioned possession or two. What you might not have realized is that the Hodgson family's ordeal was based on a real-life haunting in Enfield, London, one that's considered one of the most well-documented (and terrifying) of all time.
Well, the good folks at Apple TV+ have a brand-new docuseries headed our way that will take a four-episode deep dive into that haunting! Says the press release:
“In 1977, the terrifying haunting of an everyday family in Enfield, London, dominated headlines across the United Kingdom and had a tremendous impact on an entire generation of children. The mysterious case forever changed ideas about the supernatural and that it wasn’t just restricted to castles and stately homes but could be experienced by anyone, anywhere. The chilling story has inspired fictionalized versions of the case, including the film The Conjuring 2, a television series, and two stage plays."
Today brings us the first trailer for The Enfield Poltergeist. Let's take a look...
The press release goes on to describe the production of the docuseries (which was directed by Jerry Rothwell) thusly:
“Throughout four episodes, the events at Enfield are reconstructed using the real recordings captured by Maurice Grosse, a paranormal investigator who archived all of his interviews with those affected by the phenomenon. Building a replica of the house where the incidents took place, performers reenact what is heard on the actual tapes, allowing an interplay by the archival voices and appearances of those originally involved in the incident through present-day interviews.”
All of this sounds great to us, and we're particularly encouraged to learn that The Enfield Poltergeist was produced by MetFilm and Concordia Studio, whose most recent effort was Apple’s excellent (and Emmy-nominated) STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie. These folks know how to execute a great doc, and we're curious to see everyone involved bringing their talents to a paranormal tale.
The Enfield Poltergeist will hit Apple TV+ in its entirety on October 27th, just in time for Halloween. Nothing further to report on this one at this time, but do stay tuned for further updates should any roll in between now and the show's streaming premiere.
