All the way back in 1992, Infogrames (yes, Infogrames, not Infogames; back in those days we spelled things they way we wanted to spell them and we liked it) released a game for the PC called Alone in The Dark. Generally recognized as one of that decade’s better horror games, the title told the classic tale of a private investigator, a young woman searching for a missing family member, and a big, spooky mansion where all manner of unspeakable horrors lurked inside. It was, if I may, scary as fuck.

The game was successful enough to warrant two sequels (neither of which were as good as the first) and, in the years since, a number of attempted reboots that never came close to delivering the same pants-soiling scares of the 1992 original. The franchise was last seen turning itself into a reportedly terrible online shooter in 2015, which seemed very much like the final nail in the coffin.

Or was it?

This, my friends, is the very first trailer for THQ Nordic’s Alone in The Dark reboot, and to my eyes it looks like our best chance yet to see this franchise put back on track. Even better? It’s an actual reboot, featuring the same character and primary location of Infogrames’ 1992 original.

Here’s a plot description:

Return to Derceto Manor in this reimagination of Alone in the Dark, a love letter to the 90’s cult classic horror game.

Deep in the 1920’s south, Emily Hartwood’s uncle has gone missing. Together with private investigator Edward Carnby, she embarks on a journey to Derceto Manor to uncover the secrets of this mysterious place and the circumstances of her relative’s vanishing.

Encounter strange residents, nightmarish realms, dangerous monsters and ultimately unveil a plot of rising evil. At the intersection of reality, mystery, and insanity, an adventure waits that will challenge your core beliefs. Who can you trust, what will you believe, and what will you do next?

We all know that game trailers can be deceptive (depending on the day, this writer might tell you that they’re not even worth paying attention to until they’re showing off actual gameplay), but what’s here does look like a return to form. Of course it looks great, but it also sounds great and, in tone, feels very much of a piece with the game that scared the absolute bejeezus out of an entire generation.

Right now there’s no word on when the new Alone in The Dark might arrive — for all we know, it could be a long ways off — but rest assured we’ll be keeping close tabs on its status as we work towards a release date. Stay tuned!
