Zombies, golden vampires, “RINGU” director’s latest and more at New York Asian Film Festival

NYASIANFEST14LINEUPFEAT

The complete lineup of the 2014 New York Asian Film Festival has been announced, and as usual, there are supernatural shenanigans sprinkled among the martial arts, gunplay and other attractions.

Among the movies being presented at the fest, presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Subway Cinema in association with Japan Society from June 27-July 14, are several from veteran producer Sir Run Run Shaw. These include THE LEGEND OF THE 7 GOLDEN VAMPIRES, a co-production between the Shaw Brothers and Hammer Films that pits Peter Cushing’s Van Helsing and David Chiang as his Chinese counterpart against evil bloodsuckers, and SEEDING OF A GHOST, Chuan Yang’s insane, go-for-broke exploitationer featuring necrophilia, mutant births and lots more.

Also on the slate are the North American premiere of MONSTERZ (pictured above), a remake of the 2010 South Korean film HAUNTERS about the battle between two paranormally gifted men, from RINGU and DARK WATER director Hideo Nakata; the New York premiere of MISS ZOMBIE, from Japanese filmmaker Sabu, a combination of horror and social satire that takes place in an alternative Japan where the undead have been domesticated; the New York premiere of Kim Ki-duk’s MOEBIUS, a black comedy of perversion (see review here); Juno Mak’s RIGOR MORTIS, set in an apartment building infested with supernatural creatures, with JU-ON/THE GRUDGE’s Takashi Shimizu as a producer; the New York premiere of writer/director Chung Mong-hong’s SOUL, a dreamy slasher psychodrama about a restaurant worker on a killing spree, co-starring martial-arts legend Jimmy Wong Yu (who will appear in person, and will receive the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival); and a screening of Ricky Lau’s hilarious, trendsetting 1985 comedy MR. VAMPIRE.

There’s lots more great stuff in the NYAFF lineup; the full schedule and further details will be posted very soon here.
