What is up with the new “FRIDAY THE 13TH”? Producer Comments

Over the weekend, Crave Online spoke with Platinum Dunes producer Brad Fuller, who among other things of genre interest, is currently developing the highly anticipated return of FRIDAY THE 13TH. Of course, with the next film slated to be the 13th of the iconic series and rumors of a found footage view of Crystal Lake, interest is high. So, what’s the current status? Aside from nothing seemingly set in stone, Fuller’s answer may surprise you.

Putting aside any found footage talk for a brief minute, when  Fuller was asked about the possibility of Derek Mears donning the mask again, he explained:

“I don’t know because I don’t know if we’re going to have Jason, I don’t know which Jason we’re going to have. I can tell you this: I love Derek Mears, I love working with him and he’s a dream, so we’d be lucky to have him.”

What exactly does this mean? Will the new film be something of an entire reboot, resembling the first film despite the 2009 remake’s quick recapping of it in its opening minutes? Is ‘which Jason’ a hint the film may give us more time with the young, impaired and deformed boy who drowns?

As for the ever popular point-of-view medium, Fuller says:

“I’m well acquainted with some very loud members of the audience who hate found footage and I understand that. I think for us it’s more about what the story is and what’s the best way to tell it. Until we figure out exactly what the story is for the next Friday the 13th movie, I can’t tell you what it’s going to be.”

What I’d love to know is, what exactly is the reluctance to simply making a pure Jason film? Keep an eye on Fango for all FRIDAY news. The next installment of FRIDAY THE 13TH is slated for March 13, 2015.

Found footage sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ft13 is my favorite franchise of all time. Friday needs jason!!!! Id like to see a tommy jarvis take on the next film. Bring back feldman. Or some kind of summer camp setting like part 6. But please ni found footage. I enjoy the stories behind friday films but i also love watchin Jason do his thing. Bring this next film back to the roots of what friday the 13th used to be.Back in the day it was the story tellin and the film making that has brought me to love the friday the 13th. Franchise!!!

Found footage is not only a bad idea, it’s a lazy one too. There are so many ways to breathe new life into the series. Don’t do it please. Why not go back to space while you’re at it?

    Kane Hodder. Please!

I would go with a prequel. Go back to a psychotic mother grieving for the loss of her son. Perhaps a little backstory of Jason, have him drown, then have the mom go all crazy on the counselors following the season after her son’s death. Don’t do cliche (ie she escapes from a nut house), have her normal, still working around children, but going to counseling to deal with her son’s death, then snap at the end of spring beginning of summer!

He’s simply saying that he doesn’t know anything yet, so also not how Jason is represented. A direct follow up to the reboot seems the most logical, why do another reboot? The trick would be to do something interesting with the characters besides Jason. Jason is Jason and people like him as he is, the only way to do something new is to make other characters more interesting too – rather than just lambs for the slaughter.

I remember watching Friday the 13th as a kid. Even though Jason was a hero. but Tommy Jarvis was a good hero for Horror fans. Just love to see a Film with Jason and tommy Jarvis in it….something original would be nice too. After the remake. who ever wrote that film needs his brain removed and never let to right another film again.

Guy’s, you’re all freaking out over the Found Footage idea and over “Kane Hodder PLZ!!!!” Let’s calm down and take a step back for a moment, and really think about this. Friday the 13th is one of those series that has been long, long running.

Let’s look at the found footage idea first, We’ve seen Jason in damn near every setting imaginable. He’s been in the forest, he’s been in the city, he’s been in the sewers, in space and in dreams. So tell me, how is a found footage style Friday movie actually a bad idea? It can’t be any worse than going into space. And as cringe worthy as Jason X is, there’s some genuinely fun parts to that movie. Besides, taking a story from the pure prospective of the people visiting Crystal Lake, from their POV, may make Jason, I don’t know…actually scary again? Consider the fact that these days, it’s more about watching Jason off the teens than actually identifying with them and worrying about them. I’d say it’s time we get a film with some solid writing that makes us worry. And if doing it from a 1st person perspective from the pov of the people does it… then shit, let’s go that route.

Now, to all those screaming for Kane to come back… I love Kane, he’s probably my favorite Jason, I know his legacy for these films, he’s the Jason I grew up on. And yeah, it would be awesome if they got him back… But let’s be realistic, Kane’s been working on other horror since FvJ… There’s also a new idea for Jason these days, and Kane just doesn’t fit the bill. What we’re going to see is either, We’ll get Jason, or it might even be another reboot with Ms.Voorhees as the killer. At this juncture we don’t even know if the killer’s going to be Jason… hell they could pull a “New Blood” and go with a copycat. So again, I say, would it be cool to have Kane back? Yes. Are we going to see him back? Probably not. And, as much as it pains me to admit it. It may be for the better not to have him back.

At the end of the day, we need to see where this takes us. I understand change is a scary thing… but let’s let them make the change, then see what happens before we all start flipping shit and overturning tables like manchildren hmm?

I understand your point, but I have zero expectations when we get change in this series. Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X are an insult. Sure they have some good moments, but overall the film makers didn’t give a damn about the fans.

  • Frankenhooker

I want one in the snow with a frozen Crystal Lake. Or a good sequel to Manhattan with radiation Jason.

Perhaps it should be found footage, so it destroys the series. I’m tired of being shit on by the film makers.

How bout you just leave it alone

    Kane Hodder all the way…..
