Update Rundown: “SCOOBY DOO”, “AMERICAN GODS” and More…

With the world of horror constantly on the go, keeping up with the glut of news and tidbits coming out of the genre can be a painstaking affair. Luckily, FANGORIA has rounded up some of the most notable updates and is here to give you the skinny on the scare fare coming your way from across the horror landscape.

First up, Entertainment Weekly has recently announced that comic book giant DC plans to reboot four classic Hannah-Barbara works, including the family favorite and frequent horror gate-way series SCOOBY DOO. Though Scooby and the gang have been re-booted, released, and re-mixed at least a dozen times in a dozen ways, the newest re-imaging will be as far away from kid friendly as it can get. Titled SCOOBY APOCALYPSE, the characters will not only carry GHOSTBUSTER-like armor to fight the undead but have themselves been updated with current fashions, most notably on Fred and Shaggy, who will be sporting tattoos with Shaggy additionally adorning stretched earlobes and a wicked hipster beard. Like, zoinks!

The official synopsis is as follows:

“Those meddling kids” and their Mystery Machine are at the center of a well-meaning experiment gone wrong and they’ll need to bring all of their mystery solving skills to bear (along with plenty of Scooby Snacks), to find a cure for a world full of mutated creatures infected by a nanite virus that enhances their fears, terrors and baser instincts. This time, the horrors are real in this apocalyptic near-future badland!

Helmed by Keith Giffen and Howard Porter, the series promises to prove that SCOOBY DOO is not only limited to kids, but can fit into the grown kids comic repertoire as well. Along with this property, DC will also be adapting THE FLINTSTONES, SPACE GHOST, JOHNNY QUEST, and, oddly enough, WACKY RACES, the latter of which will be taking a MAD MAX-turn in a post-apocalyptic racing world titled WACKY RACE LAND.

In other news, actor Ricky Whittle has cast in the lead role in AMERICAN GODS, an adaption of Neil Gaiman’s best-selling dark fantasy book of the same title. While Whittle is better known to British audiences for his roles in DREAM TEAM and AUSTINLAND, he is currently making waves on US television on the acclaimed post-apocalyptic CW show THE 100. With the main role of Shadow Moon on AMERICAN GODS now under his belt, Whittle is on his way to full-frontal American stardom.

The Starz series will be written and produced by HANNIBAL’s Bryan Fuller and GREEN LANTERN’s Michael Green, with series producer David Slade (30 DAYS OF NIGHT) attached to helm the pilot. Neil Gaiman is tied to over-see the project as well, and you can learn more about AMERICAN GODS in the Fuller-edited FANGORIA #343!

For the unfamiliar, AMERICAN GODS focuses on ex-convict Moon who, on his release from prison, finds a job as a body guard for a mysterious man known only as Wednesday. He soon learns that Wednesday isn’t just a weird guy; he’s actually the god Odin and he has a quiet a list of enemies he needs protection from, especially the new American Gods of money and technology. There have been no further announcement of upcoming cast or crew, but with Whittle’s addition, there is plenty of hope for the future.

Lastly, more good news is on the way for fans of ’80s nostalgia-fueled revivals! Like GARBAGE PAIL KIDS and over-the-top Mad Magazines, gross-out kiddie culture had reached its peak with the release of Madballs 30 years ago. Madballs were a line of rubber balls that had various grotesque faces molded on to them for some-or-other wacky purpose that became a huge success before dying the quiet, sad death of pogs and superhero trading cards. Well, thanks to toy company Mondo, Madballs are back… with a vengeance!

Re-branded as Mondoballs, Mondo will be releasing three new balls in July: Skull Face, Slobus, and Horn Head.  The balls will harken back to its younger days and will once again have outrageous features such as rubber vomit and veiny eyes for your puke-tastic pleasure! Along with original creations, Mondo has also partnered up with Marvel to release a Venom ball and has plans to release FRIDY THE 13TH and GREMLINS balls as well.
