Three DVDs of “VIDEO NASTIES” coming to the U.S.

Disc producer/distributor Severin Films recently slipped the video nasty documentary BAN THE SADIST VIDEOS into its HOUSE ON STRAW HILL Blu-ray/DVD combo (see details here), and now it’s poised to unleash another study of the UK controversy in the U.S., as the first title in its partnership with Britain’s Nucleus Films.

VIDEONASTIESSEVERINNEWSSeverin just announced that it will release VIDEO NASTIES—THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE in 2014, followed by GRINDHOUSE TRAILER CLASSICS VOLUME 1 and others from the Nucleus stable. The three-DVD VIDEO NASTIES contains Jake West’s award-winning docu MORAL PANIC, CENSORSHIP & VIDEOTAPE, about the early-’80s media panic over graphic horror titles (like CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, pictured above) that led to bans and arrests, comments by critics and experts, newly remastered trailers and lots more. “Nucleus’ collection was a smash hit in the UK both critically and commercially,” says Severin’s David Gregory, “and with more and more awareness recently in the U.S. of the notorious ‘nasties,’ from books on the subject, to festivals celebrating the condemned films, to ours and other labels’ releases proudly touting ‘Banned in Britain,’ there’s no reason why the set shouldn’t resonate with U.S. fans of horror and exploitation cinema.”

Adds Severin co-founder Carl Daft, “David and I have known Marc Morris of Nucleus since we were in high school. We used to trade illegal nasties at dodgy all-night horror shows at London’s legendary Scala Cinema. There couldn’t be a better collection to start our partnership of releasing their carefully selected compilation discs from the labyrinthine archive of Mr. Morris.”

Morris himself says, “My partner Jake West and I are delighted to be in business with David and Carl as we obviously share similar sensibilities when it comes to our tastes in exploitation cinema—both of our labels debuted with Just Jaeckin’s GWENDOLINE on different sides of the pond back in 2006.” And West, co-founder of Nucleus and a filmmaker in his own right (DOGHOUSE, EVIL ALIENS, THE ABCs OF DEATH) notes, “We’ve been talking for years with David and Carl about finding something to work on together and now’s the time to do it.” Keep your eyes here for updates on the Severin/Nucleus releases.
