“THE WITCH” star says M. Night Shyamalan’s “SPLIT” is “not a horror film”Movies/TV,News Michael Gingold
Actress Anya Taylor-Joy, riding a wave of raves for her performance in Robert Eggers’ THE WITCH (opening this Friday from A24), will also be seen early next year in M. Night Shyamalan’s SPLIT—which, she says, won’t be a full-on frightfest like his previous movie THE VISIT.
Not surprisingly, Taylor-Joy can’t divulge plot details of the notoriously secretive filmmaker’s latest, which also stars James McAvoy, Haley Lu Richardson, Sterling K. Brown, Jessica Sula and BOOK OF SHADOWS: BLAIR WITCH 2’s Kim Director, and opens January 20, 2017 from Universal. “It’s M. Night Shyamalan, so I don’t want to open my mouth, because I’ll get into trouble and Night will kill me—I’m so sorry!” Taylor-Joy tells us, though she adds, “I will say that SPLIT is not a horror film.”
And she’s unguarded in her praise for Shyamalan. “Night has become one of my dearest, not just movie friends, but friends, period, and is a wonderful mentor, in the way that Rob is. They’re both true auteurs who are so about the craft and the love behind it, and it’s all about the work. Night makes movies with a specificity that is unbelievable, and if Rob was my introduction to learning what acting is, Night took me to college. He demanded excellence from me at all times, and I’m the kind of person who wants to give that excellence every single time—and if it’s not what the filmmaker wants, I will do whatever it takes to get there.”
She certainly delivers in THE WITCH; see our review here and look for more of our chat with the actress at this site very soon.
