“THE GREY’s” Grillo joins “PURGE” sequel

The first casting for the rapidly approaching THE PURGE sequel has been revealed, and it’s certainly an inspired one. Frank Grillo (pictured above, right), one of the best character actors working today, has boarded the James DeMonaco-helmed sequel as its new lead.

Horror hounds will remember Grillo more fondly from the remake of MOTHER’S DAY and Wes Craven’s MY SOUL TO TAKE, though Grillo has made a name for himself from projects such as WARRIOR, THE GREY, END OF WATCH, ZERO DARK THIRTY and HOMEFRONT, and will appear as the infamous villain Crossbones in the upcoming CAPTAIN AMERICA sequel as well.

Grillo is a great choice, even if his role is still being kept under wraps. He’s incredibly charismatic and versatile, while also strong enough to play imposing. I’d be a lot more convinced that he could handle his own against a world of psychopaths as opposed to Ethan Hawke, who led the previous film. There’s still no word on who will be joining the film—or returning from the first for that matter—but with Grillo on board, I’m officially giving THE PURGE 2 another shot to make good on the promise of the burgeoning series’ premise.

THE PURGE 2 is in theaters June 20, 2014. [Deadline]
