The Dreadful Ten: 10 Horror Films for Science Fans!Fearful Features,Movies/TV,News Ken W. Hanley
One common misconception about the horror genre is that, due to their reliance on emotional response, they’re somehow intellectually weaker than standard dramatic cinema. Though that could be attributed to the amount of scare fare out there, having outproduced almost every comparative genre in the industry, there are certainly a good amount of horror films for the more scientific minds out there. So for this week’s Dreadful Ten, FANGORIA offers up 10 horror films best suited for science lovers!
10. THE TERMINATOR
While the film night not ride high on logic, there’s enough theoretical discussion on time travel and cybernetic organisms both in and stemming from the film to almost forget there’s incredibly bloody and thrilling action-horror set pieces.
9. FROM BEYOND
Talk about bad biology; while H.P. Lovecraft’s dense love for the scientific makes him a favorite for the intellectual crowd, FROM BEYOND goes the extra mile to incorporate interdimensional rifts and the Pineal gland into it.
8. PRINCE OF DARKNESS
With some of the script influenced by theoretical physics and atom theory, PRINCE OF DARKNESS doesn’t get bogged down by the science enough to keep the frightening film from getting under your skin.
While CUBE’s voyeuristic qualities and high-concept proves to be alluring for horrorheads, the film’s third act descent into prime numbers and algorithms will keep science junkies paying extra careful attention.
6. FRANKENSTEIN (1994)
Although the story of FRANKENSTEIN has always carried with it some biological baggage, the story has rarely gone into the specifics of its science more than Kenneth Branagh’s eerie 1994 adaptation.
James Cameron’s second appearance on this list, ALIENS is another highly-scientific endeavor, with terraforming, biology, stasis and more heavy-duty sci-fi concepts balancing out the hard-hitting action and monster movie madness.
FLATLINERS is the rare breed of genre film that has such a great, engaging concept that one basically forgets you’re watching a sinister spin on a science-heavy medical drama.
Perhaps the best time travel film for science junkies outside of PRIMER, TIMECRIMES doesn’t dabble as much into mad science as it does into science from which madness transpires.
2. THE FLY
THE FLY has everything one would want in a film: a believable central romance, compelling performances, jaw-dropping FX work and dense science that drives the petrifying plot.
1. ALTERED STATES
The king of science-horror, ALTERED STATES delves into transgressive concepts and scary surreal visuals, but makes sure to hit all of it’s scientifically-inspired checkmarks along the way.
And now, here are some honorable mentions that unfortunately didn’t make the cut…
THE LAST WINTER (2006)
THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933)
