The Creepers and Creations of “GOOSEBUMPS” Come to Life in New Pics

Surely the novelty of a big screen GOOSEBUMPS is that of bringing to life many of the creepers, creatures and creations of R.L. Stine’s horror novels for the young. For those of us that consumed the books tirelessly, the prospect of a big budget realization of Slappy the Dummy for instance, is at least a curiosity, if not wholly exciting. As San Diego Comic-Con rears its head, new images from the Jack Black-starring picture put a focus on the monsters.

USA Today unveiled Slappy and others from the 2015 film, which stars Black as a fictional version of GOOSEBUMPS author R.L. Stine. In the film, Teenage Zach (Dylan Minnette) moves from New York City to a small town, and finds himself intrigued by Hannah (Odeya Rush), the girl next door, but weirded out by her misanthrope father. He is R.L. Stine (played by Black), and he has a big secret: All the Goosebumps monsters come from his imagination and can manifest themselves in reality.

Things get hairy when giant praying mantises, frightful zombies and all sorts of other kooky characters and creatures run wild at night through the local high school football field and the rest of town, and Stine has to come out of his introverted shell and team with some youngsters to save the day.

The piece also reveals the aforementioned Dummy (made famous in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DUMMY and its sequels) is the cause of all of the monsters-on-the-loose.

Rob Letterman directs GOOSEBUMPS, which is out August 7, 2015. Expect more on the film out of SDCC this week.
