Stanley Film Festival ’15: Whannell-scribed “COOTIES” Set For Opening NightBooks/Art/Culture,Movies/TV,News Ken W. Hanley
Ever since its debut at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, horror fans have been patiently awaiting Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott’s COOTIES, the Spectrevision-produced horror comedy co-written by INSIDIOUS/SAW mastermind Leigh Whannell and GLEE co-creator Ian Brennan. Yet the film has sat on the shelf for quite some time, with Lionsgate issuing reshoots on the ending and contemplating a new release plan. However, horror fans will get their first chance to see the star-studded COOTIES with its new ending at this year’s Stanley Film Festival, as the film has earned the slot of Opening Night film!
For those unfamiliar with COOTIES, here is the synopsis below:
When a mysterious virus hits an isolated elementary school, transforming the kids into a feral swarm of mass savages, an unlikely hero must lead a motley band of teachers to fight for their lives.
Starring Chainsaw Award-winner Elijah Wood (MANIAC), Alison Pill (SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD), Rainn Wilson (HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES), Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), Morgan Lily (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS), Jorge Garcia (LOST), Nasim Pedrad (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE) and Whannell himself, COOTIES will be playing on Thursday, April 30th at the Stanley Film Festival in Estes Park, Colorado. Spectrevision will also be presenting their latest film, THE BOY at the festival.

UPDATE: Shortly after this announcement, Lionsgate has revealed the official release date for COOTIES, which will be September 18th on a day-and-date VOD/select theater release via their new Lionsgate Premiere label. The news comes less than 2 weeks after IT FOLLOWS proved to break the independent VOD release mold, despite having almost no theatrical trailers in rotation. Hopefully, film fans will get a chance to catch COOTIES on the big screen, and luckily, those going to the Stanley Film Festival will get that opportunity first!
