Showtime Conjures “PENNY DREADFUL” For Second SeasonMovies/TV,News Ken W. Hanley
Considering the breathtaking twists and turns in the Victorian England-based spookshow, it’s no surprise that PENNY DREADFUL has officially been picked up by Showtime for a second season.
Filling Showtime’s horror void following the departure of DEXTER and MASTERS OF HORROR, PENNY DREADFUL has compellingly combined the worlds of Dracula, Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and other classic horror icons for one of the creepiest shows on television. Luckily, for the show’s massive international fanbase, the 10-episode second season will bring back not only PENNY DREADFUL mastermind John Logan and executive producer Sam Mendes, but also stars Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Timothy Dalton. Also starring Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, Harry Treadaway, Danny Sapani, Billie Piper and David Warner, the principal talent of PENNY DREADFUL will return to Dublin, Ireland to shoot the second season, aiming for a 2015 return.
The renewal is also another win for the horror genre on television, which has brought in record-shattering ratings on cable with THE WALKING DEAD and impressive longevity with programs like TRUE BLOOD. And while we spoke of the show’s quality in FANGO’s pilot review, PENNY DREADFUL has remained surprisingly consistent with its scares week after week. With over half of a season to go and another 10 episodes to follow, one can only assume that Logan’s unsettling universe will get only deeper and darker.
