San Diego So Far: “I, FRANKENSTEIN”, “HANNIBAL” and more confirmed for Comic-ConBooks/Art/Culture,Movies/TV,News Samuel Zimmerman
The annual, enormous show-and-tell of geek and genre properties in San Diego is fast approaching. As per usual, Fango will be there on the show room floor and in the panels, and if you’re attending too, here’s some first inklings on what you might like to check out.
Taking over much of downtown San Diego this July 18-21, Comic-Con International is the usual preview playground for what to expect in film and television over the next year. Of course, there’s always a good deal of horror that lies within, be it collectibles and comics on the exhibit hall, or trailers and panels in the Halls and Meeting Rooms.
On the latter end, if you’re curious about the upcoming Aaron Eckhart-starring I, FRANKENSTEIN, Saturday, July 20 will be an early day for you. You’ll have to anticipate and prepare for a massive line as it will be sharing the stage with fellow Lionsgate film and phenomenon, THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE. The film, based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, is “set in a dystopic present where vigilant gargoyles and ferocious demons rage in a battle for ultimate power, Victor Frankenstein’s creation Adam (Eckhart) finds himself caught in the middle as both sides race to discover the secret to his immortality.” Cast and crew is expected to be on hand, and as a trailer hasn’t debuted yet, so is exclusive first footage. Sadly, Lionsgate’s upcoming, and fantastic, YOU’RE NEXT doesn’t seem to be getting any HALL H time, but you should very much be excited nonetheless.
Also making an appearance is HANNIBAL, the NBC series based on the Thomas Harris-crated serial killer/cannibal and his relationship with agent Will Graham. Praised greatly over its first season run, fans (I suspect some of you are included here) were relieved that it’s been renewed for another go and creator Bryan Fuller, producer Martha De Laurentiis and star Hugh Dancy will be teasing where it goes.
Boutique DVD and Blu-ray label Scream Factory (an offshoot of Shout!) has set up a panel to talk their brand of tender, love and care applied to cult gems and genre classics. Their Collector’s Editions include HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH, LIFEFORCE, PRISON, the first disc release of THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN, DEADLY BLESSING and more. Their upcoming titles include an AMITYVILLE three-set, a Vincent Price collection and John Carpenter’s PRINCE OF DARKNESS. Cliff MacMillan (Scream Factory DVD Producer) and Jeff Nelson (Scream Factory Marketing Director) will take you behind the scenes, introduce exclusive footage, and announce future releases.
As far as I’m concerned though, the star of SDCC will be Jason Voorhees. NECA has announced and shown off a splendidly odd collectible in the form of a video game Jason figure. Based on the notoriously hard FRIDAY THE 13TH Nintendo title (and replicating its packaging), Video Game Jason is glow-in-the-dark and priced to cherish at a sweet $25. NECA will hold court at Booth #3145. Come say hi while I stand in line for this!
Expect great deal more in the coming weeks, including a special event for Fango fans!
