Photos of “FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3’s” Original Ending Unearthed

The beloved FRIDAY THE 13TH series is awash in whispers and rumors and candid comments of what was cut. Bigger gore, alternate kills and more lay just beyond reach thanks to missing footage, etc. Today, in what’s surely a Halloween treat, comes a clearer picture of one of the most discussed missing pieces: the original, Chris Higgins-beheading ending of FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3.

Directed by Steve Miner, FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3 originally saw final girl Chris Higgins (Dana Kimmell) eat it. In Peter M. Bracke’s crucial CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES: THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF FRIDAY THE 13TH, actor Larry Zerner (Shelly in PART 3), explains:

The ending was actually changed a few times, in terms of both what was shot and what was originally conceived. The very first ending in the original script is that, the morning after her ordeal, Chris wakes up in the canoe, then goes into the barn and finds everyone’s bodies. She then decapitates Jason with a sickle. But that was never filmed. Instead, they first shot what became the alternate ending. I was there—I saw it. Chris wakes up in the canoe and hears Rick calling to her from the lodge. She paddles over to the shore, jumps out and runs to the porch. We see Rick running inside, and Chris running in tandem, and then she gets to the door, opens it, and Jason is there with the machete. He chops her head clear off. Dana even had this wig and fake head. I remember watching that and thinking, ‘What a great ending!’ And they didn’t use it. I’d love to see it.

Now we can, in a way! Billy Kirkus, who also posted and unearthed early HALLOWEEN test footage last year, has uncovered still photography from the original ending of FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3. Both production and behind-the-scenes stills greatly detail the beheading of Chris Higgins, from how it was intended to end the film, to how it was pulled off on set. Friday The 13th Franchise has excitingly premiered the photos. You can see a small selection, below. For the entirety, visit Friday the 13th Franchise.

Happy Halloween!
