“PHANTASM: REMASTERED,” “CARNAGE PARK,” latest from the “EVIL DEAD” team and more in SXSW Midnighters

,

The Midnighters selections for this year’s SXSW Film Festival have been announced, and it’s chock full of movies from veteran horrormeisters and up-and-comers.

Taking place March 11-19 in Austin, Texas, SXSW will showcase the world premiere of the completed PHANTASM: REMASTERED, J.J. Abrams’ restoration of Don Coscarelli’s classic (an unfinished version showed at Austin’s Butt-Numb-A-Thon last December). Also represented will be Sam Raimi via the UNTITLED FEDE ALVAREZ/GHOST HOUSE THRILLER, directed by the EVIL DEAD remake’s Fede Alvarez and a.k.a. A MAN IN THE DARK.

Other filmmakers in the Midnighters lineup are Mickey Keating with his crime shocker CARNAGE PARK; ABSENTIA and OCULUS’ Mike Flanagan with HUSH, about a deaf woman stalked by a killer; Shinsuke Sato with I AM A HERO, about the horrific aftermath of a traffic accident; actor Thomas Dekker with his directorial debut JACK GOES HOME, starring Rory Culkin; RED WHITE & BLUE’s Simon Rumley with JOHNNY FRANK GARRETT’S LAST WORD, about an executed man’s curse; Sean Brosnan, son of Pierce, with his feature directorial debut, the revenge drama MY FATHER, DIE; Babak Anvari with the wartime chiller UNDER THE SHADOW (see review here); and APARTMENT 143’s Carles Torrens with PET, about a man who imprisons a woman under the animal shelter where he works.

Also announced today in the Festival Favorites section is Jim Hosking’s THE GREASY STRANGLER, from the SpectreVision team. These movies join an already genre-heavy SXSW slate; playing in other sections are Ti West’s IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE, Bobby Miller’s THE MASTER CLEANSE, Joel Potrykus’ THE ALCHEMIST COOKBOOK, Irene Taylor Brodsky’s documentary BEWARE THE SLENDERMAN, Kasra Farahani’s THE WAITING, Billy O’Brien’s I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER and Carson D. Mell’s ANOTHER EVIL. Look for coverage of the festival’s genre films at this site in the coming weeks.
