PA/NY/NJ! Carpenter, Empire, Corman fests and more this summer! Plus some cool Blu-rays…Movies/TV,News Michael Gingold
Exhumed Films has long offered must-see 35mm revivals of classic horror fare to fans in the Pennsylvania/New York/New Jersey area, and they’re going crazy this coming season with a whole slew of special events, celebrating some of the genre’s biggest names.
Next up on the schedule is an Empire Pictures marathon on Sunday, May 15 at Philadelphia’s International House (3701 Chestnut Street). The show starts at 12 noon and features five movies from Charles Band’s film factory, including three by Stuart Gordon: RE-ANIMATOR, FROM BEYOND and DOLLS. The other two are the sci-fi actioner ELIMINATORS and the Klaus Kinski vehicle CRAWLSPACE, and as a special bonus, filmmaker Daniel Griffith will present a preview of his Empire documentary CELLULOID WIZARDS IN THE VIDEO WASTELAND (which you can read more about here). And as an extra extra bonus, screenwriter Dennis Paoli will be on hand to discuss his work on RE-ANIMATOR and FROM BEYOND! Tickets are $30; for more info, check out the marathon’s Facebook page.
The remaining fests will all take place at the Mahoning Drive-In Theater (635 Seneca Road, Lehighton, PA). The first is Zombiefest II on Memorial Day weekend, presenting nine walking-dead favorites: THE GATES OF HELL, BURIAL GROUND and NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES on Friday, May 27; THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE CHILDREN and THE DEATH WHEELERS (a.k.a. PSYCHOMANIA) on Saturday, May 28; and THE BEYOND, DEATHDREAM and SHOCK WAVES on Sunday, May 29. Tickets are $10 per night, and camping on the lot is an additional $10; see the Facebook page here. The following month, the legacy of Roger Corman is celebrated with a New World Weekend. The lineup here is PIRANHA, STARCRASH and SCREAMERS on Friday, June 24 and ROCK ’N’ ROLL HIGH SCHOOL, THE BIG BIRD CAGE and HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD on Saturday, June 25. Find out more at Facebook here.
In July, you can enjoy terror from space under the stars at an Alien Weekend at the Mahoning. The program consists of ALIEN and HORROR PLANET (a.k.a. INSEMINOID) on Friday, July 22 and ALIENS and PREDATOR on Saturday, July 23. That will be followed quickly by a John Carpenter Weekend: ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THEY LIVE and ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 on Friday, July 29 and THE THING, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA and a surprise screening on Saturday, July 30. The Carpenter fest’s Facebook page can be found here.
Finally, bloodshed in the great outdoors closes out the summer at Camp Blood Part 2. The featured flicks are FRIDAY THE 13TH: A NEW BEGINNING, FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES and FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD on Friday, August 26 and JUST BEFORE DAWN, THE BURNING and THE FINAL TERROR on Saturday, August 27. See the Facebook page for that one here.
Beyond that, Exhumed has its 10th 24-hour Horror-Thon set for Friday-Saturday, October 29-30. More info and ticket sales will be coming soon to the Exhumed Films website, where you can also learn more about the organization and its upcoming presentations.
All of these shows will feature vintage horror/exploitation trailers, and for those who’d like to enjoy them at home, Exhumed’s Harry Guerro has a pair of Blu-rays out under his recently launched Garagehouse Pictures label. TRAILER TRAUMA contains vintage previews for 65 fright flicks, actioners and outrageous comedies, totalling two and a quarter hours; and the just-released TRAILER TRAUMA 2: DRIVE-IN MONSTERAMA features 96 coming attractions (nearly three and a half hours!) for creature features, supernatural shockers, etc. The trailers, many of which have never been on video before, have been digitally remastered from 35mm elements; DRIVE-IN MONSTERAMA also includes audio commentary by DVDDrive-in.com’s George Reis and THE BLOODY APE director Keith Crocker. In addition, Garagehouse has the long-lost martial-arts comedy NINJA BUSTERS available on Blu-ray, with commentary, fan tributes and more. The discs are all available at Diabolik DVD.
