Nicolas Winding Refn’s “THE NEON DEMON” Acquired by Amazon

,

Two weeks ago, this writer wrote a Deaditorial about the problematic economic relationship between streaming services and the horror genre. And while that relationship is still a bit of a concern to this writer, news broke over the weekend exclusively via Variety that might point at least one service going in a genre-friendly direction as Amazon Studios has acquired Nicolas Winding Refn’s highly anticipated horror film THE NEON DEMON.

For those unfamiliar, here’s the official synopsis for THE NEON DEMON…

THE NEON DEMON centers on an aspiring model who moves to Los Angeles where her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will go to any lengths to get what she has.

With an aim to release the film theatrically before putting the film exclusively on Amazon Prime Instant Video, the auteur’s follow-up to his stylized, violent films ONLY GOD FORGIVES and DRIVE stars Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Christina Hendricks, Bella Heathcoate, Desmond Harrington and Keanu Reeves. Frequent collaborators Cliff Martinez (as composer) and Matthew Newman (as editor) are also working on THE NEON DEMON, with the film lensed by esteemed cinematographer Natasha Braier (recently of THE ROVER).

While it’s unknown if the film will be hitting the festival scene before its theatrical roll-out (especially considering Amazon will not be handling international distribution), this move marks the studio’s first major horror film acquisition. And with Refn’s name attached, there’s a good chance that the director’s bloody, surreal vision will get the platform and exposure it deserves. Stay tuned here at FANGORIA.com for more on THE NEON DEMON and hopefully more horror acquisitions from Amazon Studios.
