Mike Flanagan’s “GERALD’S GAME” Adaptation Set for Netflix, Cast Confirmed!

For this filmmaker’s money, Mike Flanagan is one of the best horror filmmakers working today, with his unique use of perspective and innate penchant for chilling imagery nearly unrivaled among his contemporaries. Five films in to his directorial career, Flanagan has shown the range of a true horror master, from the emotionally charged ABSENTIA to the mind-bending HUSH. But horror fans might know Flanagan best from OCULUS, the haunted mirror flick that lovingly echoed the voice of Stephen King, drawing curiosity as to what- if any- King property Flanagan would ever want to adapt. Well, as confirmed by Rue-Morgue last month, Flanagan’s long-gestating adaptation of GERALD’S GAME is finally moving forward at Netflix, with Deadline confirming the cast and the details of this controversial chiller.

For those who have not read the original 1992 novel, here’s the official synopsis for GERALD’S GAME…

Gerald and Jessie Burlingame head to their summer home on a warm weekday in October for a romantic interlude that involves adult games. After being handcuffed to her bedposts, Jessie tires of her husband’s games, until things take an unexpectedly tragic turn. She’s left handcuffed, trapped and alone as painful memories from her childhood bedevil her. Her only company is a hungry stray dog, the voices that populate her mind, and possibly someone watching her from the corner of the dark bedroom.

In the lead role of Jessie, Flanagan has cast Carla Gugino, who horror fans may remember from turns in genre fare such as SIN CITY, WAYWARD PINES, and THE UNBORN. Meanwhile, the titular character will be played by Bruce Greenwood (BELOW), with Henry Thomas (FIRE IN THE SKY), Carel Struycken (TWIN PEAKS), Kate Siegel (HUSH), and Chiara Aurelia (AGENT CARTER) filling out the rest of the cast. The film will be produced by Trevor Macy of Intrepid Pictures, who most recently teamed with Flanagan for the upcoming OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL.
