“MANIAC COP” remake is a go!; scripter named

After a long period of suggestions and speculations, the remake of William Lustig’s MANIAC COP is finally ready to drive into production, with a screenwriter announced today.

According to Screen Daily, the update of the Lustig-directed, Larry Cohen-scripted 1988 original will be penned by Ed Brubaker, who received story credit on CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and wrote the 2009 Zoë Bell vehicle ANGEL OF DEATH. Major French production/sales company Wild Bunch is backing the new MANIAC COP, which will be produced by Lustig and Danish cult favorite Nicolas Winding Refn (DRIVE, ONLY GOD FORGIVES, etc.). Wild Bunch will be selling the movie at the Cannes Film Festival, where the director will be revealed; no word yet on who will play the risen-from-the-dead killer cop Matt Cordell, originally portrayed by Robert Z’Dar (pictured above).
