“MANIAC COP 2” and original get theatrical dates; latest schedule

MANIACCOP2THEATERSFEAT

The butcher with a badge is coming back to big screens as MANIAC COP 2 gets theatrical play this winter—and Fango got the first word that his first screen adventure will be joining the sequel. Read on for the details!

We got the scoop that in addition to bringing the new DCP restoration of MANIAC COP 2 to theaters, Blue Underground’s William Lustig has also supervised a fresh DCP of the first MANIAC COP, which will join the sequel at certain dates. The two films, scripted by Larry Cohen, feature Robert Z’Dar as Matt Cordell, a New York City policeman who returns from the dead to seek vengeance on those responsible for his demise, while taking out lots of other people along the way. COP 2 (which also stars Robert Davi, Claudia Christian, Michael Lerner and the original’s Bruce Campbell and Laurene Landon) is one of those rare genre sequels that’s superior to the original, boasting knockout stunt sequences supervised by Spiro Razatos (who went on to the recent FAST & FURIOUS films, among others).

“Although MANIAC COP 2, like the first movie, played theatrically upon its initial release in every corner of the world—the Pakistani poster is a hoot!—in the States it went straight to home video and HBO,” Lustig says. “While I understood the business decision, it was still a crushing blow for what I considered to be my best film—and still do. So this long overdue theatrical release is very personal for me. I’m thrilled to finally share this film with audiences around the country the way it is meant to be seen!”

Lustig will also make personal appearances at many of the screenings; below is the very latest complete schedule, with more dates to be added soon at COP 2’s webpage. See the new COP 2 poster and trailer below.
