First, Intriguing Images: Ryan Gosling’s Feature Debut, “LOST RIVER”

Announced as an official selection in the 2014 Cannes Film Festival Lineup, the curious excitement surrounding actor Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut LOST RIVER (previously, HOW TO CATCH A MONSTER) builds. Billed as something of a dark fantasty, horror noir, FANGORIA took extra notice of the film when Gosling made a bold, thrilling choice to cast the great Barbara Steele. Now, the film’s first images are certainly something to inspect.

Starring Christian Hendricks, Eva Mendes, Saoirse Ronan, Matt Smith and the aforementioned Steele, LOST RIVER is set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city. Billy, a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while Bones, her eighteen-year-old son, discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive.

The Film Stage debuted the first two stills from the film, one inviting in its production design, and the other frankly unsettling (and not far from Smith’s previous indication LOST RIVER was Lynch-ian). Expected to premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of this year’s Cannes, you can find out more on LOST RIVER by seeing our exclusive chats with Barbara Steele on her “diva of the past” here and here, and Saoirse Ronan here.
