LONDON! Kim Newman intros rare 35mm screening of Donald Cammell’s “WHITE OF THE EYE”
Donald Cammell really should be talked about in genre circles much more than he is. The visionary behind PERFORMANCE (a collaboration with Nicolas Roeg), DEMON SEED, WILD SIDE and even my personal guilty pleasure, THE TOUCHABLES, Cammell’s output was sporadic but powerful. His shamefully underappreciated 80s serial killer film WHITE OF THE EYE gets its due on Thursday June 13th when UK horror author and critic Kim Newman gives it some context at London’s Prince Charles Cinema.
The screening acts as the launch party for The Horror Show‘s new VOD service, which kicks off the next day on June 14th. Kim Newman, all-round ascot-wearing genre legend and author over two dozen novels as well as film crit staples NIGHTMARE MOVIES, APOCALYPSE MOVIES and film writer for EMPIRE Magazine, personally curated the evening’s selection, which includes Cammell’s film alongside the short film HIM, INDOORS starring LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN’s Reece Shearsmith (introduced by director Paul Davis) and horror stand-up from Richard Sandling. The Guardian‘s Damon Wise will conduct onstage interviews with both Newman and Davis.
But if nothing else, you have to go to WHITE OF THE EYE just to see Cathy Moriarty explain to a child what a sociopath is.
For those interested in learning more about Cammell’s weird and fascinating life and work, check out Rebecca and Sam Umland’s book DONALD CAMMELL: A LIFE ON THE WILD SIDE available from FAB Press, as well as the made for TV doc DONALD CAMMELL: THE ULTIMATE PERFORMANCE, part one of which is posted below.
