One of the most controversially violent Ozploitation thrillers of the ’80s, TURKEY SHOOT (a.k.a. ESCAPE 2000), is getting a reboot, and the star of SPARTACUS has signed on to head up the cast.

Screen Daily reports that Liam McIntyre, who portrayed the Roman slave turned warrior in SPARTACUS: WAR OF THE DAMNED, will play disgraced Navy SEAL Rick Tyler in the new TURKEY SHOOT, joined by Viva Bianca, his co-star in the series. The 1982 version, directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith, centered on a penal colony whose prisoners are forced to become the targets of a human hunt; in the new movie, the contest is a survival reality TV show that Tyler enters to clear his name. Australian veteran Antony I. Ginnane returns from the original to produce, with Trenchard-Smith joined by Richard S. Guardian and Anthony J. Lyons as executive producers. Longtime Aussie genre filmmaker Jon Hewitt will direct from a screenplay he wrote with Belinda McClory; Lightning Entertainment is getting sales underway at the current Cannes Film Festival.
