“KILLERS” Directors Re-Team for Cryptic “MACABRE” SequelMovies/TV,News Ken W. Hanley
For those keeping their eyes on the Indonesian film scene following the release of THE RAID films, the name Timo Tjahjanto should be quite familiar familiar. One half of The Mo Brothers, Tjahjanto memorably co-directed the amazing cult segment in V/H/S/2 with filmmaker Gareth Evans as well as last year’s brutal foreign thriller KILLERS. However, those more well-versed in Indonesian horror might know Tjahjanto from his feature film debut MACABRE, a TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE homage that put the fright filmmaker on the map following its buzzworthy festival run. Luckily, fans of that contemporary cult classic have been given reason to celebrate the New Year as Tjahjanto recently announced on his Instagram that a sinister sequel to the splattery film is indeed moving forward.
Not much is known about the proposed sequel to MACABRE except for the cryptic mention of “2016,” but Tjahjanto and his filmmaking partner Kimo Stamboel will reteam with actress Shareefa Daanish to revisit the demented universe they established in the 2009 production. Furthermore, with the exception of the return of MACABRE matriarch Dara, one does not know if this project will be a sequel or a prequel, although considering the place the first film ended, it could be anyone’s guess.
MACABRE 2 joins Toronto’s increasingly busy development slate, which includes finishing the action thriller HEADSHOT, starring RAID actor Iko Uwais, and his graphic novel THE NIGHT COMES FOR US, which was initially supposed to be his solo directorial debut before abruptly halting pre-production in fall of 2014. However, if the planned sequel is half as much gory fun as MACABRE, this writer hopes this frightful follow-up comes sooner rather than later. Stay tuned here at Fangoria.com for more on Timo Tjahjanto and MACABRE 2 as it becomes available, and for those interested, MACABRE is currently available to stream for free on Hulu!
