“HEMLOCK GROVE” Writers on “THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU”

IslandLostSouls

Best adapted in Erle C. Kenton’s 1932 ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (pictured above), and most notoriously adapted in 1996′s THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU—a disastrous production detailed candidly in the pages of Fango by director Richard Stanley—Warner Bros. is planning to once again film the classic H.G. Wells tale.

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. and Appian Way and writers Brian McGreevy & Lee Shipman (HEMLOCK GROVE) are teaming to re-adapt the story of Dr. Moreau and his island of surgical experiments and beast-men. The trade is noting the plan is to create a “sci-fi film with a topical ecological message,” which the story already had in 1896.

The story itself sees Edward Prendick (Parker in ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, Andrew Braddock in the 1977 THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU and Edward Douglas in the ’96 film) shipwrecked and transported to the titular locale where Dr. Moreau has been transitioning animals into somewhat human via vivisection.

No director is attached to the new version just yet. [Deadline]

The 1977 version Island of Dr. Moreau has a special place in my heart even though many people pan it. And of course the original Island of Lost Souls is a classic… It’s yet another case of Hollyweird dipping into the same well multiple times, I’m not sure that it’s needed. I do think it could be written very well if it’s done right though. Modern audiences don’t really have a good reference for the story anymore so I guess I am OK with it.
