Has Dimension Films Scrapped “AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING”?Movies/TV,News Ken W. Hanley
What the hell is up with the AMITYVILLE HORROR franchise? In an age where haunting horror was at the top of the box office, AMITYVILLE would be the ideal candidate for a reboot in this day and age. But after the slow death of David Bruckner’s AMITYVILLE: THE LOST TAPES, its rebirth as AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING, the late 2014 release pull of its January 2015 theatrical bow, and reshoots and re-edits to bring the film down to a PG-13, one wonders what exactly it is about THE AWAKENING that is causing the hold-up. And now, with the suspicious lack of new trailer ahead of its imminent release, Dread Central reports that Dimension Films has once again pulled the Blumhouse-produced film from it’s April 1st release, and this time, it might be indefinitely.
While Dread reports that an official announcement is to come, this cannot be good for all involved. If the film is indeed pulled from release again, AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING will likely not get a third chance for a theatrical bow, especially given that Dimension’s day-and-date sister label Radius-TWC often only trades in critically acclaimed independent fare. And with Dimension having released two posters for the film in the past month, one could only assume those involved are perhaps as blindsided with this decision as audiences are.
Now, the question is where and when AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING will finally be unveiled to the world. Will it somehow get a theatrical release, per chance around Halloween akin to the recently-pulled RINGS? Will it be given the BH Tilt treatment and hit VOD/Streaming Services later this year? Will the film go direct to DVD/Blu-ray with the R-rated cut in tow? Or will AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING go back inside the Dimension vault, alongside LIVID and other misfit genre releases? Only time will tell, but stay tuned for the latest on AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING here at FANGORIA.com!
UPDATE: And here we have it! Deadline reports that AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING will indeed get a theatrical release… on January 6th, 2017. That’s right: AMITYVILLE fans will have to wait another year to see the PG-13 cut of Franck Khalfoun’s franchise reboot. Should this date change, FANGORIA will keep you all posted.
