From the FANGORIA Vault: “PROPHECY” (1979)

Finally, the warmth of spring is upon us here at the FANGORIA archive! How do we know? Aside from the downpour of acid rain and our blood-red pollinated eyes, the myriad monsters are finally coming out of hibernation! Coincidentally, some particularly boorish beasties dragged with them some stills from a classic nature-gone-wrong film, PROPHECY!

Starring Talia Shire, this John Frankenheimer film offers a genetically-mutated bear with an uncontrollable thirst for vengeance, with top notch special effects across the board. Frankenheimer’s unique perspective and take on the film lifted PROPHECY over the numerous JAWS rip-offs, but few would realize how divisive the film is. Often considered one of the first eco-horror films, PROPHECY is still argued among horror fans to this day, with some remembering it as nightmarish and others remembering it as ill-conceived. Either way, PROPHECY has earned its spot in creature feature history. So pack up your belongings, tie-up your food and take a good, long look at these rare stills from PROPHECY.
