First Looks: Riley Stearns’ “FAULTS”, Ben Wheatley’s “HIGH RISE”Movies/TV,News Ken W. Hanley
With all the news coming down recently about the big-budget studio horrors of 2015, sometimes it’s easy to forget some of the fright films on FANGORIA’s peripheral vision. Yet in those instances, FANGORIA’s expectations are often easily trumped, especially when those indie horrors are the likes of Ben Wheatley’s HIGH RISE and Riley Stearns’ FAULTS.
In the case of the former, which follows a socialite antihero as he battles his way through class-divided floors when his high-rise apartment building becomes a hotbed of horrors, Ben Wheatley’s latest venture into viscera has debuted its first image (which you can see above) and details via Empire. The still, which features Tom Hiddleston as the aforementioned socialite Dr. Laing, doesn’t reveal too much about the film, but definitely shows that Wheatley has one hell of a production designer on the flick, bringing J.G. Ballard’s titular complex to life. It also shows Hiddleston at his most sinister, which is all the more compelling considering he’s supposed to be the hero. More on HIGH RISE as it develops…
However, in the case of the latter, the first trailer for the darkly comic tale of a cult-breaker way out of his depths has debuted, and it is impressive. The trailer definitely sets a surreal tone for the film, bouncing between humor and horror with intriguing ease reminiscent of TWIN PEAKS. Even if the film grounds itself in terror as it goes on, the atmospheric dynamic of FAULTS is one this writer is particularly intrigued on following, especially consider it’s a Snoot Production (who also made YOU’RE NEXT and THE GUEST), and sports some heavy character-acting talent, including Leland Orser, Lance Reddick, AJ Bowen, Jon Gries, Beth Grant and an super creepy Mary Elizabeth Winstead. You can check out the trailer for the flick below; expect to hear more about FAULTS soon.
