Exclusive: Rory Culkin talks “WELCOME TO WILLITS” creature featureMovies/TV,News Michael Gingold
While talking to FANGORIA about this week’s home-invasion-horror release INTRUDERS (look for more of that chat tomorrow), actor Rory Culkin gave us the scoop on a genre project he’s about to start shooting: an expansion of the SXSW short chiller WELCOME TO WILLITS: AFTER SUNDOWN.
The feature, also titled WELCOME TO WILLITS, reunites director Trevor Ryan and his scripter brother Tim Ryan from the 14-minute original, which played as part of last year’s SXSW Midnight Short competition (you can watch it and read more about it here). “To sum it up,” Culkin tells Fango, “it’s about this type of meth that, if you smoke it, you can see beings around us that may or may not exist. It’s sort of like, this drug is a window into what’s actually going on around us, and there’s a whole question of whether you’re just tripping or your eyes are truly open. I’m really into it; FINGERPRINTS OF THE GODS [about a lost civilization on Earth] is a book I really like, and there’s a little reference to that in this movie, so I’m looking forward to that.
“I play a character named Possum,” the actor continues. “He’s a drifter that this group of people picks up, and he starts talking about aliens and what’s really going on. It’s a weird part, and there’s going to be a lot of room to play around—he seems like a sandbox of a character.”
As for the rest of the cast, “As of now—you know, things are never cemented until we’re there—but Katrina Bowden [from TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL] and Thomas Dekker are gonna be in it.” It’s a reunion for Culkin and Dekker, as the latter directed Culkin last year in his feature filmmaking debut, the horror/drama JACK GOES HOME. “How often does that happen,” Culkin says, “where you direct someone, and then in a movie totally unrelated to your own, within the same year, you’re acting side by side? It’s great.”
