Exclusive: First look at Sid Haig-starrer “HIGH ON THE HOG”Movies/TV,News Fangoria Staff
The legendary Sid Haig gets down and dirty again in HIGH ON THE HOG, a violent new crime thriller. Fango got exclusive words with one of the stars of this Southern shoot-’em-up, as well as photos from the film.
Directed by Tony Wash, the Hicktown Entertainment Inc. production follows an undercover drug enforcement agent (Katrina Hill) as she infiltrates a weed farm run by Big Daddy (Haig) and his surrogate daughters. However, she’s surprised to find herself sympathizing with the farmers, and soon is caught in the crossfire between the criminals and her desperate fellow agents. Co-starring SOULTAKER alums Joe Estevez and Robert Z’Dar, HIGH ON THE HOG sports big guns, badass babes and enough Bible-belt bloodshed for any horror fan.
Actress Fiona Domenica (who plays daughter Lenore, pictured above with Haig) opened up about the film to Fango, telling us, “The bits I’ve seen from the cut feel quite real. One of my friends saw a little clip and said it was a bit like RED STATE in how it was shot, even though the story is completely different. There are scenes where I think the audience can feel with what’s going on, like they’re there with us. HIGH ON THE HOG is horror, but it’s a crime thriller, too; there’s some gore, but also a little bit of something for everybody.”
Lenore is a bisexual, violent girl, and Domenica says of taking on the role, “I like complex characters. Lenore comes from an abusive family background, and she’s also running from an abusive boyfriend, and she gets taken in by Big Daddy. She’s extremely intelligent, inquisitive in life and always reading. I really found her interesting. She is very sweet to her family, and when things get difficult, there’s a light in her that shines out. One of those qualities is that she’s overprotective; she gets a handgun or a shotgun and defends her family, or tries her best to. She kind of loses it at some point.”
Domenica also has positive words about her co-stars: “Sid Haig is awesome. First of all, he’s really professional and he knows his stuff. He’s got a hard shell on the outside, but then you get to know him and you realize he’s lovely. I learned a lot from him, and there were times where things changed last-minute, so we would work together and change up the scene in an afternoon. He was just a really nice guy. Joe Estevez was very warm, and he shook everyone’s hand and was very chatty. I had a couple of scenes with him, but I don’t want to give anything away. The director might kill me! Robert Z’Dar and I had a couple of scenes and did some talking together. He was very professional and loved being on the set. They felt passionate about the script, so they really wanted to be a part of it. There was a lot of camaraderie and love amongst the group.”
And while HIGH ON THE HOG may have its horrific onscreen moments, Domenica says the shoot was daunting as well. “We were out in the middle of nowhere, and for an English person like me, it felt like being on the set of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. There was an eerie feel to it, and a lot of crazy night shoots. There were lots of times when it was 3 a.m. and it’d finally be my time to shoot. It was tough, but I learned a lot about how to get better, and how adrenaline stops you from feeling tired. When you’re passionate, you just keep going. Also, I was wearing shorts and a little top and carrying a shotgun for many scenes, and running in a cornfield. It was driving me crazy! You literally keep going because, by God, you want it to be as brilliant and as wonderful for the audience as possible.”
What else does the film have in store? According to Domenica, L.A. Guns frontman and one-time Guns N’ Roses guitarist Tracii Guns will be doing HIGH ON THE HOG’s score. “We’re waiting on some songs from him, and a little ADR, but I think we’re aiming to release in the summer. I’m not sure, though. The trailer is coming out very soon!”
