Excl Interview: Roger Corman talks new YouTube channel, “CORMAN’S DRIVE-IN”
No matter the weather, the sound of Roger Corman’s voice lifts this writer’s spirits. Even more uplifting is when that mirth laden, measured timbre is delivering exciting news about a new Corman initiative. At age 87, the legendary mogul is as spry and energized as ever and now, along with his business partner and wife of four decades, Julie, is launching CORMAN’S DRIVE-IN, a new YouTube channel that is part of a paid subscription experiment running via Google and Hulu.com.
Starting mid-June, for an almost invisible monthly sum, Roger and Julie will open their staggering vaults streaming everything from early Allied Artists Corman classics like LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS and CRY BABY KILLER to mid-period New World gems like THE BIG DOLL HOUSE, PIRANHA and SORORITY HOUSE MASSACRE to family flicks like MUNCHIES and STEPMONSTER. Over 400 films will eventually be available in rotation, in HD, commercial free and padded with new features, interviews with legendary Corman alumni and much, much more…
It’s a veritable B-movie pig-out of epic proportions. But don’t take my word for it. I got on the phone with Roger and Julie today to discuss this exciting new channel and what plans the savvy couple has for it. Julie has been producing pictures for as long as she’s been wed to her iconic hubby and she knows more than a thing or two about distribution and how to navigate an ever-altering business landscape. She’s confident that this venture will work, and who are we to doubt her?
But it’s Roger who is doing the programming. And having a blast doing so. So enough of my prattle, here then, is the always remarkable, always fascinating Roger Corman on the new channel…. and on the passing of his former associate, director Eddie Romero.
