Eerie acquisitions: Lionsgate gets “COOTIES,” Anchor Bay to open “FEAR CLINIC”Movies/TV,News Ken W. Hanley
As a year noticeably scant on major genre releases, especially compared to the horror-heavy one before it, 2014 has plenty of room for genre sleepers to make their mark. So as rumblings make their way out of the Sundance Film Festival, it’s no surprise that horror fans can start making room on their calendars, as two notable fright flicks have found Stateside distribution.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first acquisition comes courtesy of Lionsgate, which has looked toward Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision production company for its next horror hopeful: COOTIES (pictured above), co-scripted by SAW and INSIDIOUS veteran Leigh Whannell. The child-zombie movie stars Wood, Whannell, Rainn Wilson, Jack McBrayer and Alison Pill, and joins a Lionsgate slate that also includes I, FRANKENSTEIN, THE QUIET ONES and JESSABELLE. No release date has been set yet for COOTIES, but expect to see this star-heavy film before SpectreVision’s other Sundance debut, the Iranian vampire Western A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT.
Meanwhile, the feature adaptation of FEARnet’s popular web series FEAR CLINIC has found a home as well, as the Reporter confirms that Anchor Bay has picked it up for theatrical, VOD and home video release this year. FEAR CLINIC, which stars Robert Englund, Fiona Dourif, Thomas Dekker and Angelina Armani, was partially funded via crowdfunding site Indiegogo, despite losing web series stars Kane Hodder and Danielle Harris late last year. Reports say that the adaptation will not see release until late 2014, though here again, no specific date has been confirmed.
