Details revealed for Scream Factory Romero Blu-rays: “MONKEY SHINES” and “DARK HALF”

George A. Romero’s DEAD films have been showcased in numerous special disc editions, and now two of his non-zombie films are getting their overdue Blu-ray debuts; read on for the full specs.

Shout! Factory will release Romero’s MONKEY SHINES (1988) and THE DARK HALF (1993) November 18 under the Scream Factory banner. MONKEY SHINES, based on the novel by Michael Stewart, focuses on a paralyzed man (Jason Beghe) who receives a trained monkey to help with his needs, only for the animal to start carrying out his darkest impulses. In addition to the 1.78:1 widescreen transfer, the Blu-ray will include:

• New audio commentary by Romero
• New “An Experiment In Fear – The Making of MONKEY SHINES” retrospective with Romero, actors Beghe, John Pankow and Kate McNeil, executive producer Peter Grunwald, special makeup FX creator Tom Savini, special makeup FX assistants Greg Nicotero and Everett Burrell and editor Pasquale Buba (49 minutes)
• Alternate ending
• Deleted scenes
• Behind-the-scenes footage

DARK HALF, adapted from Stephen King’s novel about a writer (played by Timothy Hutton) who decides to retire a pseudonym under which he penned graphic crime novels—only for this alter ego to murderous manifest in the real world—will also be presented in 1.78:1 widescreen, with the following extras:

• New audio commentary by Romero
• New “The Sparrows Are Flying Again!: The Making of THE DARK HALF” retrospective with Romero, producer Declan Baldwin, actors Michael Rooker, Robert Joy, Rutanya Alda and John Amplas, composer Christopher Young, special makeup FX creators John Vulich and Everett Burrell, visual FX supervisor Kevin Kutchaver, 2nd unit director Tom Dubensky and editor Pasquale Buba (36 minutes)
