Creatures of all sort show up for Guillermo del Toro’s “SIMPSONS” opening creditsMovies/TV,News Samuel Zimmerman
Beloved fantasist and horror filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has taken the honor of an invitation to create a SIMPSONS couch gag and crafted a two+ minute opening sequence, rich with riffs on horror history, from classic monsters to those that imagined them, to the director’s own filmography.
It’s tempting to rattle off all of the loving nods packed into del Toro’s sequence. Stephen King and Ray Harryhausen get their due, as do the Universal Monsters (of course) and PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE and H.P. Lovecraft. Suffice to say, it’s easy to watch (and rewatch and rewatch) with a wide smile, as the filmmaker dug deep. Example? While telling EW how his chain of monstrous events connects, del Toro says “Or the famous shot that is always in the titles — Maggie driving and then you pull back and there’s Marge driving, right? But in this case Maggie is driving, and she’s driving the car from the horror movie from the 70s called The Car, which is one of my favorite guilty pleasure B-movies.”
