Event Report: “INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3” Into The Further 4D Experience!

While this may seem somewhat of a generic mantra for a horror fan, this writer is always searching for that next big scare. As haunted house experiences get more and more interactive and the media landscape changes, that search becomes increasingly adventurous and new. But while I’ve experienced horror in theme park attractions, theaters, haunts, video games and many more places, I’ve yet to experience horror in the world of virtual reality. However, INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 was willing to change that with their now-touring ‘Into The Further 4D Experience’.

“THE WOMAN IN BLACK 2: ANGEL OF DEATH” (Blu-ray Review)

It’s not easy being a sequel, especially when you’re the sequel to an acclaimed remake of an acclaimed film based off an acclaimed novel and produced by the grandaddy of horror houses, Hammer. But in any case, being a sequel such as THE WOMAN IN BLACK 2 is even harder considering the nature of the first film, which took stock in hard-to-replicate environmental scares instead of cheap jump scares. And while THE WOMAN IN BLACK 2: ANGEL OF DEATH isn’t quite as effective as it should be, the film still makes an admirable and classy attempt at capturing the literal and figurative spirit of the first film.

Book Review: “SEX AND HORROR: THE ART OF EMANUELE TAGLIETTI” (NSFW)

Artist Emanuele Taglietti is one of the most celebrated masters to emerge from that unique period in 1970’s Italy, when morale shifted and the popular fumetti (Italian comic books, literally translated as “puffs of smoke”, an allusion to speech bubbles) followed more liberal strains of genre cinema and more overt, explicit sexuality was visualized on their covers. Tagleitti, a former set designer who had worked with Fellini, jumped on this, exploiting the comforts of working from home by becoming a full-fledged cover illustrator, nurturing a style that was sensual, lurid, saturated and bristling with energy.

Exclusive Pic; Announcement: Oscilloscope Labs Nabs Festival Fave “BODY”

When it comes to genre entertainment, a sign that a genre film is truly unique, surreal and of high caliber is when it lands at Oscilloscope Laboratories. The distributor behind flicks like RARE EXPORTS, BELLFLOWER, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN and COHERENCE, Oscilloscope’s releases often have an exploratory nature to them, venturing into directions and content that is ultimately much different than fans expect, and often to their delight. So with that in mind, Dan Berk and Robert Olsen’s acclaimed thriller BODY just skyrocketed towards this writer’s “must-see” list as the film has officially been acquired for North American distribution by O-Scope.

    “EVERLY” (FANTASTICA Blu-Ray Review)

For genre fans, EVERLY is, on many levels, Joe Lynch’s time to shine without lingering in any specific shadow. While the Troma graduate has made good over the years and developed his skills as a filmmaker, his previous feature films, WRONG TURN 2 and KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM, have largely operated against the reputation of a franchise or, in case of the latter, behind the scenes problems. But with EVERLY, Lynch had the chance to create a bloody and badass tale in a universe of his own design, and while the film hits peaks and valleys narratively, the sense of passion in Lynch’s cinematic voice is unmistakable.
