    “THALE” (DVD/Blu-ray Review)

THALE is a lovely film, epitomized by its titular creature, which is a gorgeous one indeed. Written and directed by Aleksander Nordaas and based on Norwegian folk tales of cow-tailed temptresses called Huldra, THALE (on DVD and Blu-ray/DVD combo from XLrator Media) takes a classic-monsters approach to its story, evoking empathy for the sheltered, experimented-on beauty (Silje Reinåmo) as well as the best-friend duo who discover her.

  • Trailer: Take your first look “UNDER THE BED”

Steven C. Miller, who just last year brought us both THE AGGRESSION SCALE and loose Santa slasher redo is entering more monstrous territory with Amblin creature feature throwback UNDER THE BED.

The increasingly prolific indie filmmaker tells the story of “the monster under the bed. Neal Hausman’s mistake was trying to fight it. Neal (Jonny Weston) has returned from a two-year exile following his tragic attempt to defeat the monster, only to find his father ticking ever closer to a breakdown, a new stepmother who fears him, and his little brother Paul (Gattlin Griffith), terrorized by the same monster. While Neal and Paul work together to try and fight the nocturnal menace, their parents are taking desperate measures to get the family back to normal. With no support from their parents, the brothers have nothing to rely on but each other, and courage beyond belief.”

XLRATOR Media, who also has the Soska Sisters’ AMERICAN MARY on the way, releases UNDER THE BED July 19. [The Wrap]

    “TEN GRAND” #1 (Comic Review)

In the wide world of comics, Noir and Horror have sat down to drink more often than one would think. From John Constanine’s globe-trotting, mystical escapades to Cal McDonald’s ghoulish case files, paranormal mystery men have become a staple of the medium as much as superheroes and tragic origins. With the recent launch of TEN GRAND, we are once again reminded why the world seems endlessly fascinated with a dimly lit bar and a sob story. A work mixing striking visuals and strong writing, it joins Image Comics’ recent fascination for bizarre crime stories, most notably, CHIN MUSIC written by Steve Niles and FATALE from Ed Brubaker. Though it has yet to be seen if it will pick up as much steam as its predecessors, it can be safely assumed TEN GRAND might stick around for the long run.

Horror Fans! See “HATCHET III” and help Adam Green & Co. help Boston

Horror cares. The genre’s fan base knows devotion and support and I knew very soon after the terrible Boston Marathon bombings that both something horror-related and something hardcore-related would give aid. This past Monday saw the likes of heavy heroes Converge headline a This is Boston benefit show, and now hometown filmmaker and genre nut Adam Green, teamed with Rock and Shock  and Wicked Bird Media, has announced plans for three days worth of donating that culminates in a special sneak preview of the highly anticipated HATCHET III.

BBC’s Zombie series “IN THE FLESH” hitting U.S. this June

In February we got glimpses of IN THE FLESH, a UK series with a zombie protagonist preparing to re-enter the world at large. Now, as is often the case, the show will hit our shores via BBC America this June.

In what looked especially interesting as a decently fresh take on a decidedly not-so-fresh subgenre, IN THE FLESH’s outbreak is referred to as PDS (Partially Deceased Syndrome). “The series follows 18-year-old Kieren Walker (Luke Newberry), a PDS sufferer who, now treated with the medication Neurolax, is deemed ready to return to his parents’ home in the small village of Roarton. Since the passing of the PDS Protection act, the government has set an agenda of acceptance and tolerance, one that is at odds with the communities abandoned at the time of The Rising, and the bloody battle between zombies and humans that ensued. A cauldron of brutal anti-zombie sentiment boils in Roarton, the home of the ‘rotter’ hating Human Volunteer Force (HVF). Can Kieren’s neighbors forgive him for what he did in his untreated state? More importantly can Kieren forgive himself?”

IN THE FLESH is set to premiere in miniseries form on Thursday, June 6 at 10 p.m. You can see a trailer above.

CONCENTRATED RAGE UNDER A MAGNIFYING GLASS: Underground Cartoonist Rick Trembles remembers Ray Harryhausen (1920-2013)

It doesn’t matter that I never managed to become a stop-motion animation special effects monster movie maker myself. You see, because of Ray Harryhausen, that’s what I desperately wanted to be when I grew up. It doesn’t matter that his medium’s been obsolete for decades. Despite his passing, I will continue to obsessively hunt down any information I can find on the techniques he mastered till the day I die, as if I were about to embark on my own dream-Dynamation extravaganza any second now. I still want to be Ray Harryhausen one day.
