FANGORIA Presents: Getting Possessed By “ENTITY,” Part One

There are few thoughts that inspire as much dread as the sins of our pasts—our figurative ghosts following us, reminding us of our fallacies and mortality through our own mistakes and trespasses. And if our sins could manifest themselves into something malevolent and unrelenting, we could be sure we’d be dead to rights. It’s for this reason that ENTITY, the new release under the FANGORIA Presents banner (go here for details; to find Fango’s Comcast collection on your VOD channel, search Movies > Movie Collections > Fangoria), transcends simplistic scariness and creates an overall atmosphere of visceral fear.

    “TORTURE CHAMBER” (Movie Review)

Horror is a base genre in many respects, as it taps into our anxieties about what’s beyond the door for us all, about death and what–if anything–lies beyond. Shame then, that most genre movies get bogged down in pedestrian plotting, exasperating exposition and trivial twists. The greatest horror films are not steered by their scripts; rather, they are works of sensual alchemy. Martin Scorsese once said of Bava’s work–and I’m paraphrasing–that “Bava made films that bypass your brain and go right to your gut.” Indeed his films, and many of the great works of European horror, trade in visceral imagery and sound design to bring their nightmares to grand fruition. And if you’ve ever had a really juicy, heart squeezing, body sweating, wake-up-screaming-and-pull-the-covers-up-close nightmare, you’ll know that plot, character and dialogue aren’t what gets blasted forever onto your psyche. What strikes you and what sticks with you can’t even find articulation for, it just is.

    “THALE” (DVD/Blu-ray Review)

THALE is a lovely film, epitomized by its titular creature, which is a gorgeous one indeed. Written and directed by Aleksander Nordaas and based on Norwegian folk tales of cow-tailed temptresses called Huldra, THALE (on DVD and Blu-ray/DVD combo from XLrator Media) takes a classic-monsters approach to its story, evoking empathy for the sheltered, experimented-on beauty (Silje Reinåmo) as well as the best-friend duo who discover her.

  • Trailer: Take your first look “UNDER THE BED”

Steven C. Miller, who just last year brought us both THE AGGRESSION SCALE and loose Santa slasher redo is entering more monstrous territory with Amblin creature feature throwback UNDER THE BED.

The increasingly prolific indie filmmaker tells the story of “the monster under the bed. Neal Hausman’s mistake was trying to fight it. Neal (Jonny Weston) has returned from a two-year exile following his tragic attempt to defeat the monster, only to find his father ticking ever closer to a breakdown, a new stepmother who fears him, and his little brother Paul (Gattlin Griffith), terrorized by the same monster. While Neal and Paul work together to try and fight the nocturnal menace, their parents are taking desperate measures to get the family back to normal. With no support from their parents, the brothers have nothing to rely on but each other, and courage beyond belief.”

XLRATOR Media, who also has the Soska Sisters’ AMERICAN MARY on the way, releases UNDER THE BED July 19. [The Wrap]

    “TEN GRAND” #1 (Comic Review)

In the wide world of comics, Noir and Horror have sat down to drink more often than one would think. From John Constanine’s globe-trotting, mystical escapades to Cal McDonald’s ghoulish case files, paranormal mystery men have become a staple of the medium as much as superheroes and tragic origins. With the recent launch of TEN GRAND, we are once again reminded why the world seems endlessly fascinated with a dimly lit bar and a sob story. A work mixing striking visuals and strong writing, it joins Image Comics’ recent fascination for bizarre crime stories, most notably, CHIN MUSIC written by Steve Niles and FATALE from Ed Brubaker. Though it has yet to be seen if it will pick up as much steam as its predecessors, it can be safely assumed TEN GRAND might stick around for the long run.

Horror Fans! See “HATCHET III” and help Adam Green & Co. help Boston

Horror cares. The genre’s fan base knows devotion and support and I knew very soon after the terrible Boston Marathon bombings that both something horror-related and something hardcore-related would give aid. This past Monday saw the likes of heavy heroes Converge headline a This is Boston benefit show, and now hometown filmmaker and genre nut Adam Green, teamed with Rock and Shock  and Wicked Bird Media, has announced plans for three days worth of donating that culminates in a special sneak preview of the highly anticipated HATCHET III.
