Bill Zebub’s “INDIE DIRECTOR” (Movie Review)

For years, this writer had been avoiding the work of enfant terrible filmmaker Bill Zebub for no other reason than they just didn’t speak to me. Zebub’s greasy oeuvre includes such quaintly christened features like ANTFARM DICKHOLE and JESUS, THE TOTAL DOUCHEBAG and I’ve seen enough no-budget junk in my time to be wary of pictures like this: movies that bait their audiences with cheap shock tactics, the cinematic equivalent of the grade school brat in the corner of the class with the cone hat, farting and making faces while the teacher contemplates murder-suicide. Just not my speed.

New “OCULUS” Poster Goes Through the Looking Glass

Allow me to express this sentiment again: Mike Flanagan’s OCULUS is a very highly anticipated horror film here. Having delivered the terrific, eerie ABSENTIA, and coupled with stunning festival word (including from Fango’s own Chris Alexander), it seems Flanagan has something special on his hands and each new piece of art ratchets up anticipation. A new one sheet has arrived, illustrating the otherworldly nature of this accursed mirror that haunts the film and its characters, and even sort of reminds me of the end of PRINCE OF DARKNESS.

EXCL Clip: Zombie Thriller, “THE RETURNED”

It’s refreshing in an oversaturated undead climate to see some films and series attempt to get back to one of the more interesting aspects of zombie cinema: allegory. Romero’s DEAD films are legendary and part of their greatness comes from the willingness to engage the audience and discuss their lives and the world surrounding them. Manuel Carballo’s new film THE RETURNED is also looking to push zombies into a thoughtful arena, crafting a world where the outbreak has come and gone and is now treatable.
