    While there are plenty of films who turn to their lesser aspects in an attempt to wrangle the title of “cult film,” there are select others who earn it simply through existence. Robert Martin Carroll’s SONNY BOY is firmly, undeniably in the latter category as an absolute masterpiece of weird, unhinged filmmaking at its most soulful. An aesthetic mix between David Lynch, John Waters and Terrence Malick, SONNY BOY is an essential film for those who love the bizarre, surreal and trashy cinema, and Scream Factory has done the world a kindness by bringing it to a new generation on Blu-ray.

  • The Dreadful Ten: Top 10 Horror Prequels!

    When initially approaching the concept for this week’s Dreadful Ten, this writer thought that assembling titles would be easy as could be. After all, what is the horror genre known better for than all manners of prequels, sequels and spin-offs? However, upon further inspection, finding gems among the many horror prequels is more of a frustrating endeavor, with most of the best prequels happening on television and/or as flashbacks in a sequel.   • “AVA’S POSSESSIONS” gets dated, releases Spirit Possession Anonymous video

    A different approach to the demonic-takeover genre will be on screens soon courtesy of the horror/satire AVA’S POSSESSIONS. Read on for the release info and a look at a special promo video introducing you to a horrific recovery organization.

    Written and directed by ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE UNDEAD’s Jordan Galland, AVA’S POSSESSIONS world-premiered at last year’s SXSW Film Festival and also played at Montreal’s Fantasia, and arrives in theaters and on VOD from Momentum Pictures March 4. It stars Louisa Krause in the title role, along with GIRLS’ Jemima Kirke, Alysia Reiner, Deborah Rush and genre veterans Carol Kane (WHEN A STRANGER CALLS), William Sadler (TALES FROM THE CRYPT: DEMON KNIGHT, THE MIST), Whitney Able (ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE, MONSTERS), Lou Taylor Pucci (EVIL DEAD, SPRING) and Dan Fogler (HELLBENDERS, TV’s HANNIBAL).
