  • “THE X-FILES: Season 10, Episode 4” (TV Review)

    After putting together an out-and-out contemporary classic with “Scully and Mulder meet the Were-Monster,” one might have imagined that the next installment of THE X-FILES would have a tough time reaching that high bar. Yet to be perfectly honest, one could assume that no one expected “Home Again” to be a busy, unfocused and frankly disappointing chapter of THE X-FILES revival. After all, Glen Morgan’s writing and direction on the series has frequently been stellar, but when THE X-FILES announced its return would be contained to a six-episode event series, the fact that one episode missed the mark so prominently shows that the little time fans have with Scully and Mulder again feels more valuable than it once was.

  • Eerie Episodes: “MASTERS OF HORROR: Pick Me Up”

    To be perfectly honest, it’s shocking that “Pick Me Up”- in concept as well as in present execution- never found itself previously adapted in the horror genre. Considering both of the urban legends it’s based off, each of which have been individually adapted in projects such as THE HITCHER and BREAKDOWN, as well as the post-SCREAM slasher boom in the ‘90s, a project like “Pick Me Up” would seem to be a no-brainer, at the very least on paper. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until MASTERS OF HORROR came along that the project specifically took life, allowing the concept to run wild even if its within the constraint of a limited budget and TV schedule.

  • FANGO Flashback: “SHOCKER”

    One of the things this writer loves so very much about Wes Craven’s filmography is that, when left to his own devices, Craven was not afraid to go absolutely crazy with his work. In that sense, several of Craven’s films throw caution to the wind as irreverent humor, dream logic and bloody horror run wild in an orgy of cinematic madness, such as THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS, NEW NIGHTMARE and SHOCKER. And in terms of the latter, Wes Craven uses his unique and twisted sensibilities to try to create a new horror icon, notedly as a response to the franchise from which he was exiled from, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.

  • For Your Consideration: The 2016 Chainsaw Award Nominees for Best Actress!

    With voting season now open on the FANGORIA Chainsaw Awards, fans are putting their minds at work to select their favorites out of every potential nominee. When it came to Best Actress, this was definitely the most contested and debated category of this year’s awards, with many, many actresses in heavy consideration: SOME KIND OF HATE’s Grace Phipps, THE HARVEST’s Samantha Morton, THE GIFT’s Rebecca Hall, SPRING’s Nadia Hilker, FELT’s Amy Iverson and THE FINAL GIRLS’ Taissa Farmiga. That’s not even considering all the fantastic female performances from ensembles from which it was difficult to even nominate a leading actress, such as THE MIDNIGHT SWIM. Yet with the limitations of only five available nomination slots, FANGORIA had to highlight the lead female performances that stood out most among the crowd in 2016.
