Farewell to the Lovely Karen Black (1939-2013)

Onscreen she was tough, she was sexy, she was sad, tweaked and twitchy. Often relegated to cult status despite her monolithic talent, Karen Black continued to woo audiences through nearly five busy decades of performing. Karen Black didn’t belong to the horror genre—by the time she made her first genre appearance she was already well known as a rising star from EASY RIDER, FIVE EASY PIECES and CISCO PIKE—but as soon as she showed up in TV’s supernatural anthology series GHOST STORY/CIRCLE OF FEAR (her first of a handful of Matheson scripts to come) we wanted to keep her.

“INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2″ Featurette: Wan and Whannell talk Astral Projecting & The Further

Whereas THE CONJURING is an (amazing) old-fashioned haunter, James Wan’s second scary film of the year has the potential to be its weirder counterpart. The astral projection of INSIDIOUS and its timeless, dark space The Further is something I’m greatly excited about delving deeper into. The latest featurette for the sequel finds new footage and filmmakers Wan and Leigh Whannell talk getting in there and getting scary.

Do you remember the strange little tag after the credits of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4? Did you make it that far once PARANORMAL ACTIVITY4 ended? If you missed, two young gentleman were frightened out of a convenience store by its owner, who spoke Spanish that roughly translates to, “This is only the beginning!” That brief scene was meant to tease an upcoming Latino-aimed spin-off that’s now being called PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES, and will hit theaters this January.

Mario Bava’s “KIDNAPPED”: Confined in the Open Country (Blu-ray Review)

Kino’s ongoing transfer of the work of Mario Bava to Blu-ray presents not only a celebration of the Italian master’s filmography, but a way to gorge and gain perspective on a filmmaker that’s gone on to influence so much. I did as such last year, upon release of BLACK SUNDAY, HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON and LISA & THE DEVIL. Viewing all three, spread throughout Bava’s career, in a vaccum (with Tim Lucas’ informed commentary accompanying) shone light on the more personal flourishes in Bava films. Namely, that his homebody nature and reticence to leave Italy became a theme of confinement to history, legacy, supernatural fate or psychological trauma. So, what happened when Bava got out?

    “APARTMENT 1303″ (Movie Review)

For all save the tiniest minority of urban dwellers, compromises when it comes to securing decent living space are a fact of life; an intricate calculus weighing variables of location, price, relative state of decay, and security to see how close one can sneak up on the ideal.
